Beyond Physical Transformation
In an industry where actors often undergo dramatic physical changes for a role, Ranbir Kapoor has made it clear that his preparation for Ramayana was rooted in something deeper. While his commitment to a strict fitness regimen and diet has been well-documented,
the actor emphasized that this was the 'easy' part. The real challenge, he explained, was to truly understand the philosophy and teachings of Lord Ram. “To really understand the philosophy of Lord Rama deeply at this age and this point in my life was really important to embody this character,” Kapoor stated, highlighting that his goal was a portrayal that people from all generations could relate to.
The Teachings of Dharma and Compassion
So, what are the teachings that Kapoor has been immersing himself in? At the heart of Lord Ram's life story is the concept of 'Dharma'—righteousness, duty, and moral order. It is the principle of doing the right thing, even when it is incredibly difficult, as exemplified by Ram's acceptance of a 14-year exile to honor his father's word. Beyond duty, his teachings emphasize compassion for all beings, integrity, humility, and forgiveness. For Kapoor, internalizing these virtues was more crucial than any external change. This involved dedicated study, with the actor revealing he “read a lot” and consulted with scholars to grasp the nuances of the ancient texts.
A Spiritual and Disciplined Approach
Kapoor’s preparation extended into a disciplined spiritual practice. For two years, he worked closely with a guru, practicing yoga and meditating for hours at a time. This long-term commitment was aimed at getting “really close to the teachings of Lord Rama.” The goal was to achieve a state of inner calm and understanding that would translate into a simple, honest, and uncomplicated performance. This meditative approach suggests that Kapoor's Ram will be less about divine spectacle and more about embodying the quiet strength and moral clarity that has made the deity a symbol of virtue for millennia.
The Weight of a Billion Expectations
Portraying arguably the most revered figure in Indian culture comes with immense pressure. Director Nitesh Tiwari, known for masterfully handling sensitive and large-scale stories like 'Dangal', is helming the ambitious project. The film also reportedly stars Sai Pallavi as Sita and 'KGF' star Yash as the antagonist Ravana, making it one of the most anticipated films in Indian cinema history. Co-star Ravie Dubey, who plays Lakshmana, recently praised Kapoor as "simply the best we have," noting his grounded nature despite being a superstar. Kapoor's thoughtful and philosophical approach seems to be a direct acknowledgment of the responsibility he carries. By focusing on the essence of Ram's character rather than just the mythology, he is aiming to create a portrayal that is both authentic and respectful.
