The Convenience Trap of 'Set It and Forget It'
Unified Payments Interface (UPI) Autopay has revolutionised how we manage recurring bills in India. From OTT platforms like Netflix and Hotstar to music streaming, grocery deliveries, and even Systematic Investment Plans (SIPs), setting up an automatic
payment is seamless. This 'set it and forget it' functionality ensures you never miss a due date, avoiding late fees and service interruptions. The process is simple: you authorise a merchant to debit a certain amount from your account at a fixed frequency. This convenience, however, has a downside that many are now discovering.
Subscription Creep: The Hidden Drain on Your Finances
The very convenience of UPI Autopay leads to a common problem known as 'subscription creep'. This happens when you sign up for multiple services, often with introductory offers, and then forget about them. A free trial for a new app, a one-month subscription to a digital magazine, or a gym membership you no longer use can all continue to debit small amounts from your account. While a payment of ₹99 or ₹199 might seem insignificant on its own, several such forgotten debits can add up to a substantial sum over months, quietly eating into the cash you could be saving or investing.
Your Monthly Financial Health Check
Think of auditing your UPI Autopays as a crucial monthly financial health check-up. The goal is to regain control and ensure your money is only going where you want it to. By dedicating just 15-20 minutes each month to review your active mandates, you can identify and eliminate these wasteful expenses. This simple habit helps prevent revenue leakage from your personal budget, ensuring that money you've earned but forgotten you're spending is redirected back into your savings. This isn't about cutting out services you love and use; it's about consciously trimming the fat.
How to Find Your Active UPI Mandates
Finding all your active mandates is the first step. The process is similar across most major UPI applications like Google Pay, PhonePe, and Paytm. Generally, you need to open your UPI app, navigate to your profile, and look for a section titled 'Autopay', 'Mandates', or 'Automatic Payments'. For instance, on Google Pay, you tap your profile picture and then select 'Autopay'. On PhonePe, you find 'Autopay' under your profile's 'Payment Management' section. This section will typically show you a list of all your 'Live' or 'Active' mandates, which are approved for future debits.
Taking Back Control: How to Cancel Unwanted Mandates
Once you have the list of active mandates, go through it carefully. If you see a service you no longer use or don't recognise, you can cancel it directly from the app. Select the mandate you wish to stop, and you should see an option like 'Cancel Autopay', 'Revoke Mandate', or 'Stop AutoPay'. The app will ask you to confirm the cancellation, which usually requires entering your UPI PIN for authorisation. Once confirmed, the merchant can no longer automatically debit your account using that mandate. It's a quick and powerful way to immediately stop unwanted payments.
Make It a Habit for Lasting Savings
A one-time audit is great, but making it a recurring habit is where the real power lies. New subscriptions will inevitably appear, and it's easy to fall back into the 'set it and forget it' trap. Set a recurring reminder on your calendar for the first week of every month to review your UPI Autopay settings. This small, consistent effort ensures you stay on top of your automated payments, prevents future subscription creep, and keeps more of your hard-earned money in your savings account, month after month. It transforms a simple check into a robust financial discipline.
