A Welcome New Connection
In a move celebrated by travel enthusiasts, Indian Railways has launched a new daily express train connecting Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) with Sawantwadi Road in the southern Konkan region. This service, operating under train numbers
15087 and 15088, directly addresses the long-standing demand for better connectivity to this popular coastal belt. Designed to cater to tourists, families, and solo explorers, the train aims to make the region's many attractions more accessible. The introduction of a daily service provides a reliable and consistent travel option, moving beyond the seasonal or weekly specials that often fill up quickly, especially during peak holiday seasons.
The Journey is the Destination
Travel on the Konkan Railway is an experience in itself, and this new service is no exception. The route is renowned for its breathtaking scenery, carving a path between the majestic Sahyadri mountains and the sparkling Arabian Sea. Passengers can expect to be mesmerized by views of lush green paddy fields, dense forests, and dramatic viaducts spanning deep valleys. The journey is punctuated by over 90 tunnels and countless bridges over glistening rivers, offering a constantly changing and picturesque landscape. Especially after the monsoon season, the route comes alive with gushing waterfalls and vibrant greenery, making the train journey a highlight of the trip rather than just a means of transport.
Gateway to Coastal Gems
The new train makes stops at several key stations, unlocking a treasure trove of weekend destinations. Travellers can disembark at Ratnagiri to explore its historic forts and indulge in its famous Alphonso mangoes. Further south, the stops at Kankavli, Sindhudurg, and Kudal serve as gateways to the pristine beaches of Malvan and Tarkarli, famous for watersports and fresh seafood. The final stop, Sawantwadi Road, is a quaint town known for its wooden toys and its proximity to the hill station of Amboli, a biodiversity hotspot. This direct link significantly cuts down on the complexity of planning trips, which previously required multiple modes of transport.
Planning Your Konkan Rail Trip
The new service is designed for convenience. The CSMT-Sawantwadi Road Express (15087) operates as an overnight service, departing Mumbai late in the evening and arriving in the Konkan the following afternoon, allowing travellers to save on time and accommodation costs. The return journey (15088) is also conveniently scheduled. The train features a mix of coach classes, including air-conditioned tiers (AC 2-Tier, AC 3-Tier), Sleeper Class for the budget-conscious, and unreserved General compartments, making it accessible for various budgets. Tickets can be booked through the official IRCTC website and app, and it is advisable to book well in advance, particularly for long weekends and festive periods.
Train vs. Road: A New Contender
While the road trip down the Konkan coast is scenic, it can also be long and tiring, especially with city traffic and winding ghat roads. This new daily train offers a compelling alternative. It allows travellers to avoid the stress of driving, bypass traffic jams, and simply relax. The overnight schedule is a game-changer, effectively adding a full day to your getaway. For families with children and larger groups, the train provides a more comfortable and spacious environment. Furthermore, train travel is often a more economical and environmentally friendly choice, making it a smart and sustainable way to explore the beauty of Maharashtra's coastline.
