During these sessions, you create microscopic tears in your muscle fibres and place stress on your cardiovascular and nervous systems. This stress is a powerful signal for your body to adapt and grow stronger. The Necessity of Recovery

To repair and rebuild, you need to activate the “rest and digest” parasympathetic nervous system. This is when the magic happens: muscles are repaired, energy stores are replenished, and your entire system returns to a state of balance. Active recovery, which involves light movement on rest days, is particularly effective. Activities like walking, gentle cycling, or swimming increase blood flow to the muscles, which helps flush out metabolic waste and deliver nutrients needed for repair, reducing soreness. Prioritising sleep and nutrition is also a non-negotiable part of this process, as they provide the foundational building blocks for recovery.
Embracing Lower-Pressure Movement
Lower-pressure movement, often called Low-Intensity Steady-State (LISS) cardio, is the third pillar of a balanced routine. This includes activities like brisk walking, light jogging, or cycling at a conversational pace for 45-60 minutes. Unlike high-intensity work, LISS is less demanding on the body, making it ideal for recovery days or as a way to build endurance without excess strain. LISS improves your body's ability to use fat for fuel, enhances blood flow, and supports heart health. It’s also incredibly beneficial for mental well-being, helping to reduce stress and regulate the nervous system. This type of movement is accessible to all fitness levels and serves as the connective tissue in your weekly plan, allowing for consistent activity without accumulating fatigue.
How to Structure Your Week
Putting these three elements together doesn't have to be complicated. The goal is to avoid scheduling two high-intensity days back-to-back and to listen to your body's signals of fatigue.
