The End of an Era for 'Free' Lounges
For years, complimentary lounge access was a popular feature even on entry-level, lifetime-free credit cards. However, a surge in passenger traffic and the resulting overcrowding of airport lounges have made the model unsustainable for banks, who pay
operators for every visit. Consequently, issuers like HDFC Bank, ICICI Bank, and Axis Bank have revised their terms. The perk is no longer truly free; it's now a privilege reserved for customers who actively use their cards, transforming it from a simple benefit into a conditional reward.
Understanding the New Normal: Spend-Based Access
The most significant change is the introduction of minimum spending requirements. To unlock complimentary lounge visits for a specific quarter, cardholders must now spend a predetermined amount in the preceding quarter. For instance, many ICICI Bank cards require a spend of ₹35,000 in the previous three-month period to grant access. Some Axis Bank cards have a threshold of ₹50,000 in the prior quarter. For some cards, the benefit has been removed entirely. The Airtel Axis Bank Credit Card, for example, discontinued its domestic lounge access benefit. Similarly, many RuPay Platinum debit cards lost this feature.
Strategy 1: Consolidate Your Spending
The most straightforward way to meet the new spending thresholds is to make one card your primary payment tool. Instead of spreading your monthly expenses across multiple cards, consolidating them onto the one that offers lounge access makes it easier to hit the quarterly target. Channel all your routine spending, from groceries and utilities to online shopping and dining, through this single card. This focused approach ensures your everyday transactions help you qualify for your travel benefits without forcing you to spend more than you normally would. It requires discipline, but it's the most direct path to retaining your lounge access.
Strategy 2: Explore Co-Branded and Mid-Tier Cards
While many entry-level cards are losing perks, some co-branded and mid-tier options still provide value. For a modest annual fee, cards like the HDFC Regalia or ICICI Sapphiro can offer a generous number of yearly lounge visits. The Scapia Federal Bank card, which is lifetime-free, offers unlimited domestic lounge access provided you spend at least ₹5,000 in the previous billing cycle. It is essential to do a cost-benefit analysis. If you travel frequently, the annual fee on a mid-tier card can often be significantly less than what you would pay for lounge access out-of-pocket for each trip, where a single visit can cost between ₹1,000 and ₹2,500.
Strategy 3: Check Your Debit Card and Other Options
While many RuPay Platinum debit cards have lost their lounge access privileges, some still offer it, often with a lower spending requirement than credit cards. For example, some debit cards only require a quarterly spend of around ₹5,000 to unlock access. Beyond cards, look into programs like Priority Pass or DragonPass. While often bundled with premium credit cards, standalone memberships can be purchased. This can be a worthwhile investment for frequent travellers who don't want to be tied to a specific card's spending conditions.
