The Official Reopening Date
The Uttar Pradesh government has officially announced that summer vacations for all schools under the Basic Education Council and recognized institutions have been extended until June 24. Consequently, regular classes for students will commence from June 25.
This decision was made to standardize the academic calendar and to protect students from the persistent heatwave conditions affecting the region. The new schedule aims to avoid repeated local-level holiday extensions and bring uniformity across the state. Parents should mark June 25 as the definitive date for their children's return to school.
Staff Preparations and School Readiness
To ensure that schools are fully prepared to welcome students, all teaching and non-teaching staff, including teachers, Shiksha Mitras, and instructors, were required to report to their respective schools from June 22 to June 24. During this three-day period, staff were tasked with completing essential preparations. These activities included finalizing lesson plans, making arrangements for the mid-day meal program, organizing textbook distribution, and holding meetings with School Management Committees. Additionally, a significant focus was placed on ensuring the cleanliness of school premises, kitchens, and toilets, and making sure that facilities like smart classrooms and ICT labs are fully operational.
Health and Safety Takes Priority
With high temperatures still a concern, the government has issued specific instructions to prioritize student health and safety. Schools have been directed to take special precautions to protect children from dehydration and other heat-related issues. This includes avoiding unnecessary outdoor activities, especially during peak heat hours. The government has also mandated that schools ensure the availability of uninterrupted electricity, clean drinking water, and other basic facilities to create a safe learning environment. Families should encourage children to stay hydrated and inform them about the importance of reporting any feelings of discomfort to a teacher immediately.
Focus on the New Academic Session
The reopening marks the beginning of several key educational initiatives for the new academic year. The second phase of the 'School Chalo Abhiyan' is set to begin on July 1, with a focus on identifying and enrolling out-of-school children. Furthermore, there will be an emphasis on ensuring regular student attendance, which is seen as a prerequisite for effective learning. Teachers have been instructed to maintain communication with parents of students who are frequently absent. For students who may be lagging academically, schools will implement a 'Catch-Up Programme' to provide extra support from the beginning of the session.
A Note on the Academic Calendar
The government's new directive aims to ensure compliance with the Right to Education (RTE) Act, which mandates a minimum of 220 working days in every academic session. This structured approach is intended to improve learning outcomes by guaranteeing sufficient teaching time. District Magistrates have been advised to keep this statutory requirement in mind before declaring any local holidays in the future. For parents, this means a more predictable and stable academic calendar, helping in better planning for the year ahead.
