The Annual Onam Travel Rush
Every year, as Onam approaches, a familiar pattern emerges: a massive wave of people travel to Kerala to celebrate with their families. This pilgrimage home, primarily from major cities like Bengaluru, Chennai, Mumbai, and Delhi, puts immense pressure
on the regular train services. Tickets on popular routes get sold out months in advance, leaving lakhs of hopeful travellers on long waiting lists. To address this predictable surge, Indian Railways, particularly the Southern Railway zone, introduces 'Special Fare Special Trains'. These are temporary services added to the schedule specifically to clear the festive rush, offering a crucial lifeline for those looking to secure a last-minute journey home.
First Announcements for 2026 Are Here
The wait is over for many, as the first wave of Onam special trains for 2026 has been announced. On July 9, Southern Railway confirmed new services to manage the festival demand. Key routes announced include weekly specials between Mangaluru Central and Chennai Egmore, as well as Thiruvananthapuram Central and Tambaram. Another service connects Chennai and Kollam. These initial trains will run on various dates through July, August, and into early September. Bookings for some of these services, like the Thiruvananthapuram-Tambaram special, opened at 8 am on July 9. This is just the beginning, as Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw has indicated that over 100 special trains are planned for Onam this year to connect Kerala with various parts of the country. More announcements are expected in the coming days and weeks.
Where to Find Trustworthy Information
In the flood of information, it is vital to rely only on official sources. The most reliable places to get updates on new trains are the official Indian Railways website (indianrail.gov.in), the IRCTC portal (irctc.co.in), and the National Train Enquiry System (NTES) app. The social media handles, especially the X (formerly Twitter) accounts of the Ministry of Railways and zonal railways like Southern Railway (@GMSRailway), are also excellent for real-time announcements. Be cautious of WhatsApp forwards or unverified news articles that can often contain outdated or incorrect information. Always cross-check with an official source before making any plans.
The Art of Booking Special Trains
Securing a seat on these trains requires speed and strategy. Bookings can only be done through the IRCTC website or the IRCTC Rail Connect app. Unlike regular trains with a 120-day advance booking period, special train booking windows open on much shorter notice, sometimes just a few days or weeks before the journey. To succeed, preparation is key. First, ensure you have an active IRCTC account. Before booking opens, use the 'Master List' feature in your IRCTC profile to save passenger details (name, age, ID proof). This saves precious time during the booking process, when every second counts. Keep your payment details, whether UPI, credit card, or wallet, ready for a quick checkout.
Understanding 'Special Fare' Pricing
It is important to note that these services are designated as 'Special Fare' trains. This means the ticket prices are dynamic and generally higher than on equivalent regular mail or express trains. The fare can increase as demand rises and seat availability decreases. While this makes the journey more expensive, it is often the only viable option for a confirmed ticket during the peak season. These trains also typically do not have quotas like Tatkal, so the general booking is the only way to get a seat. Budget accordingly and be prepared for the higher cost associated with this travel convenience.
Tips for a Smoother Journey
Flexibility can be your greatest asset. If your primary train is full, check for trains to or from nearby alternative stations. A slightly longer bus ride at the destination might be a small price to pay for a confirmed train ticket. Also, consider travelling on weekdays or during unconventional hours, as these tickets tend to have lower demand than weekend or prime-time services. Keep checking the IRCTC portal regularly, as more trains are expected to be announced. Setting up alerts on train news websites or following railway enthusiast forums can also provide timely updates.
