Another Boost for Valley Connectivity
The Railway Ministry has officially greenlit a third Vande Bharat train connecting Jammu Tawi and Srinagar. This comes in response to high demand, as the two existing Vande Bharat services on this route have been operating with full occupancy since they
were extended to Jammu on April 30, 2026. The new service, designated train numbers 26407/26408, will notably include a stop at Udhampur, a decision made following requests from the local population. This addition aims to increase capacity and provide another reliable travel option for tourists, pilgrims, and residents alike, solidifying the rail link as a primary mode of transport to and from the Valley.
Slashing the Gruelling Journey Time
Perhaps the most significant impact of the Vande Bharat service is the dramatic reduction in travel time. The journey between Jammu and Srinagar, which often takes 8 to 12 hours by road depending on traffic and weather conditions on the NH-44, is completed by the existing Vande Bharat trains in just under five hours. The current services cover the 269-kilometer distance in approximately 4 hours and 45 minutes. With speeds on the new rail sections being increased to 100 kmph, this new service continues the trend of providing a fast, all-weather alternative to the unpredictable and often perilous road journey through the mountains. This time-saving is a game-changer, making a weekend trip to the Valley from Jammu a far more feasible and attractive proposition.
A Leap Forward in Travel Comfort
Beyond speed, the Vande Bharat Express offers a level of convenience and comfort previously unavailable on this route. These trains are fully air-conditioned and equipped with modern amenities that stand in stark contrast to road travel. Passengers can expect reclining ergonomic seats, with revolving seats available in the executive class, ample mobile charging sockets, and onboard catering services. The trains also feature automatic doors, CCTV cameras for security, a GPS-based passenger information system, and bio-vacuum toilets. For travellers accustomed to the long, winding, and often bumpy bus or car ride, the shift to a smooth, climate-controlled, and feature-rich train journey represents a quantum leap in travel experience.
Riding on an Engineering Marvel
This enhanced connectivity is made possible by the monumental Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL) project, an engineering feat decades in the making. The route traverses the challenging Himalayan terrain through a series of numerous tunnels and bridges. The most iconic of these is the Chenab Rail Bridge, the world's highest railway bridge, standing 359 meters above the riverbed. Recent trials have seen the Vande Bharat successfully cross this bridge at speeds nearing 100 kmph. The completion of this all-weather rail line not only enables passenger travel but also facilitates the transport of essential goods like fuel into the Valley and horticultural produce like apples to markets across India, reducing logistical costs and dependencies on the highway.
Economic and Touristic Implications
The introduction of faster and more reliable train services is a massive boon for Jammu and Kashmir's economy, which is heavily reliant on tourism. Improved accessibility makes the region more attractive to a wider range of tourists who may have been deterred by the long road journey. The existing Vande Bharat trains have already demonstrated their popularity, carrying tens of thousands of passengers in their initial days of operation. This influx of visitors directly benefits hoteliers, transport providers, and local businesses. By providing a dependable, comfortable, and swift connection, the new Vande Bharat service is set to further integrate the Kashmir Valley's economy with the rest of the country, fostering growth and creating new opportunities.
