A Major Boost for Regional Connectivity
The introduction of the Vande Bharat Express between Surat and Udaipur marks a significant upgrade for rail travel in the region. By connecting the 'Diamond City' with the 'City of Lakes', the service aims to cater to both business travelers and tourists.
This direct, semi-high-speed link is expected to reduce travel time considerably compared to existing train and road options, providing a more comfortable and efficient journey. The service is Surat's first Vande Bharat Express, a much-anticipated development for South Gujarat. The launch is strategically planned to tap into the festive travel demand around Navratri, which begins in October 2026.
The Official Route and Halts
The train will operate as numbers 26903 from Surat to Udaipur and 26904 for the return journey. Covering a distance of approximately 690 kilometers, the route is designed to connect key commercial and cultural centers. The Railway Board has approved nine commercial stoppages between the two cities. Starting from Surat, the train will halt at Bharuch, Vadodara, Anand, Maninagar, Asarva, Himmatnagar, Shamlaji Road, Dungarpur, and Zawar before reaching Udaipur City. This extensive list of stops ensures wider access for passengers across several districts in both Gujarat and southern Rajasthan.
Timings and Days of Operation
The service is scheduled to run six days a week, with no operations on Tuesdays, a common practice for Vande Bharat trains to allow for maintenance. Train number 26903 will depart from Surat at 6:10 AM and is scheduled to arrive at Udaipur City at 1:40 PM. On its return leg, train number 26904 will leave Udaipur City at 3:35 PM and reach Surat at 11:00 PM. These timings are designed to provide convenient departure and arrival windows for both leisure and business travelers, allowing for a full day's work or sightseeing.
Travel Time and Onboard Experience
The end-to-end journey is expected to take approximately seven hours and 30 minutes. This is a significant improvement over existing direct train options, which can take over 11 hours to cover a similar distance. The train, a Mini Vande Bharat 2.0 rake with an eight-coach composition, is capable of reaching a maximum speed of 160 kmph. Passengers can expect the standard premium Vande Bharat experience, including AC chair cars, executive chair cars with rotatable seats, large windows for scenic views, onboard catering, and modern amenities like Wi-Fi and infotainment systems.
Changes to Existing Services
The introduction of this new route will lead to a change in another service. The Railway Board has approved the discontinuation of the Udaipur City-Asarva (Ahmedabad) Vande Bharat Express (train numbers 26963/26964). This service was introduced in February 2026. The new Surat-Udaipur train effectively extends the premium connectivity for Udaipur beyond Asarva, reaching key South Gujarat cities like Vadodara and Surat, thus creating a longer and more integrated Vande Bharat corridor.
