A Solution to the Festive Rush
To manage the immense demand for travel during October and November, Indian Railways has announced a significant number of special train services. Both Central Railway and Western Railway are running hundreds of additional trips from major Mumbai stations
like Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT), Lokmanya Tilak Terminus (LTT), and Dadar. These services are specifically designed to connect Mumbai with high-demand destinations, particularly in Uttar Pradesh and Bihar for Chhath Puja, as well as other states across the country. These trains operate on a "special fare" basis, which means the ticket prices may be slightly higher than usual, but they offer a crucial alternative to long waitlists on regular trains.
Central Railway's Key Services from Mumbai
Central Railway has rolled out a comprehensive schedule with over 400 special services. For passengers travelling from Mumbai, several key routes have been introduced or have had their frequency increased. One of the most significant additions is the daily special service between CSMT and Gorakhpur, a critical route for those travelling to eastern Uttar Pradesh. There are 64 services scheduled on this route between mid-October and mid-November. Additionally, Central Railway is operating weekly and bi-weekly specials from CSMT and LTT to destinations like Banaras, Mau, Nagpur, Kolhapur, and Latur. For those heading south, there are also weekly AC special trains connecting Mumbai with Bengaluru and Chennai.
Western Railway's Festive Routes
Western Railway is complementing these efforts with its own set of special trains, primarily focusing on the heavy traffic between Mumbai and destinations in North India. These trains are crucial for the large number of people travelling to Uttar Pradesh and Bihar for the festivals. Announcements for these services often come in phases, so it's important to keep checking for new train announcements from stations like Mumbai Central and Bandra Terminus. Western Railway has also extended the run of some existing special services, like the Dadar-Bhusaval weekly train, until the end of November to accommodate the holiday traffic.
How to Book Your Tickets
Booking these special trains follows the standard Indian Railways procedure, but speed is of the essence. Tickets become available as soon as they are announced and loaded into the system. The primary booking channel is the official IRCTC website (irctc.co.in) and the IRCTC Rail Connect mobile app. You can also book tickets in person at any computerized Passenger Reservation System (PRS) counter at railway stations. Bookings for most of these festive specials for 2026 opened in the last week of September. Since tickets are in high demand and get booked within minutes, being prepared is your best strategy. For real-time information on train schedules, timings at specific halts, and platform details, travellers are strongly advised to use the National Train Enquiry System (NTES) app.
Pro Tips for a Successful Booking
Securing a confirmed ticket during the festive rush requires more than just luck. First, ensure your IRCTC account is active and you remember your password. Use the "Master List" feature on the IRCTC website or app to save the details of all passengers (name, age, gender, berth preference) in advance. This saves precious time during the booking process. When the booking opens, be logged in and ready a few minutes before the official start time, which is typically 8:00 AM. If you find your desired train is already on a waiting list, don't give up. Check for special trains originating from different terminals within the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (like LTT, Panvel, or Bandra Terminus) that might have more availability. Sometimes, booking to a station just before or after your final destination can also yield a confirmed seat.
