A Clean, Uncluttered New Layout
The most immediate change users will notice is the completely redesigned interface. The old, cluttered layout filled with distracting pop-ups and flashing elements is gone. In its place is a clean, modern, and intuitive design that aims to make navigation
straightforward. One of the biggest reliefs for users will be the significant reduction in CAPTCHA verifications, a frequent source of frustration and delay, especially during high-stakes Tatkal bookings. The goal, according to officials, was to create a smoother booking journey by removing unnecessary interruptions and making the process feel less like an obstacle course. This simplified design is a direct response to long-standing user feedback, including complaints from students to the Union Railway Minister which helped catalyse the overhaul.
A Quantum Leap in Booking Speed and Capacity
The headline upgrade is the sheer power of the new backend system. The revamped platform is engineered to handle a massive increase in traffic, a critical improvement for a service that serves millions daily. The new website can now process over 1.5 lakh ticket bookings per minute, a nearly five-fold increase from the previous capacity of around 32,000. Furthermore, its ability to handle user queries has jumped from 4 lakh to over 40 lakh per minute. This massive boost in infrastructure is specifically designed to tackle the infamous slowdowns and crashes that occur during peak hours and festival seasons. For anyone who has lost a confirmed ticket because the site buckled under pressure, this upgrade promises a more stable and reliable experience.
Smarter Features for Modern Travellers
Beyond speed and aesthetics, the new IRCTC website introduces several features that bring it in line with modern travel portals. A new 'fare calendar' allows travellers with flexible dates to easily compare prices and find cheaper options. Another game-changing addition is the ability for passengers to select their preferred seats during the booking process, rather than being assigned one automatically. The process of checking availability has also been streamlined. Instead of clicking on each travel class individually, users can now view seat availability across Sleeper, AC 3-Tier, AC 2-Tier, and others on a single, unified screen, saving valuable time.
Enhanced Accessibility and Integrated Services
The platform has also been made more inclusive. It will now support multiple Indian languages, making it accessible to a wider audience beyond just English and Hindi speakers. In a significant move towards simplification, the new website integrates concession bookings for different groups like Divyangjan, students, and patients onto a single platform. This removes the need to navigate separate, often confusing, processes for availing these concessions. Features that were previously considered conveniences are now standard, such as the ability to save passenger details to expedite future bookings, making the process much faster for frequent travellers.
AI-Powered Assistance with Ask DISHA 2.0
Complementing the new website is the already powerful AI chatbot, Ask DISHA 2.0. This virtual assistant allows users to perform a wide range of actions through simple conversation, using either voice or text. You can book tickets, cancel them, check your PNR status, and even track refund requests without navigating the website's menus. One of its most convenient features is the ability to book tickets without needing to remember your password, using a secure OTP sent to your mobile instead. Available in English, Hindi, and Hinglish, Ask DISHA acts as a 24/7 helpdesk, further simplifying the entire travel planning process for all users.
