Understanding the Annual Travel Crunch
Every year, the period leading up to Diwali sees an unprecedented surge in travel, particularly on routes connecting major cities like Delhi, Mumbai, and Bengaluru with towns and cities in Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Rajasthan, and West Bengal. This concentrated
demand means that despite the 120-day advance booking window, tickets on popular trains are often sold out within minutes of becoming available, leaving many travellers on long waiting lists. The combined effect of Diwali and Chhath Puja, which follows shortly after, creates a sustained demand spike that strains the entire rail network.
Railways' Response: A Fleet of Festival Specials
To alleviate the pressure, Indian Railways has announced a significant number of 'Festival Special' trains across its various zones. Central Railway is running 418 special services, while Northern Railway and others have also announced dozens of additional trains. These services are specifically designed to cater to the high-demand corridors during the festive season of October and November, providing much-needed extra capacity. These announcements are typically made zone-by-zone in the weeks leading up to the festival, so travellers should monitor official channels closely.
Key Routes for Diwali 2026
The special services cover many of the most sought-after routes. Northern Railway has introduced services connecting key northern cities, including: the Varanasi-Delhi Special Express (04209/04210), Ayodhya Cantt-Anand Vihar services (04213/04214), and trains connecting Chandigarh and Firozpur Cantt with Patna (04512/04511, 04616/04615). Central and Western Railways are focusing on connections from Mumbai and Pune. Notable services include weekly trains between Mumbai and Chennai, a bi-weekly service between Mumbai and Latur, and a near-daily train between Kolhapur and Kalaburagi. Additional trains will also connect Mumbai and Pune with destinations like Gorakhpur, Nagpur, and locations in Kerala and Goa.
How and When to Book Your Ticket
Booking for these special trains is already open or will open shortly. Tickets can be booked through the official IRCTC website (irctc.co.in), the IRCTC Rail Connect app, and at computerised reservation counters at railway stations. It is crucial to note that these special trains often come with special charges. Given that these trains fill up extremely fast—sometimes within hours of the booking window opening—speed is essential. Passengers are advised to keep their IRCTC profiles and passenger master lists updated to save time during the booking process.
Essential Tips for a Confirmed Berth
Securing a ticket during the festive rush requires planning. Be ready to book the moment the window opens, and have alternative travel dates in mind, as travelling a day or two before the peak date can significantly increase your chances. If you are on a waiting list, don't lose hope. Monitor your PNR status regularly, as many tickets get confirmed closer to the travel date due to cancellations. Another strategy is to try a 'break journey', booking tickets for two legs of a trip separately if a direct ticket is unavailable. Also, keep an eye out for last-minute Tatkal bookings, though this is a high-stakes option with limited availability.
