Why Ditch the Soda?
It's no secret that most carbonated sodas offer little in terms of nutrition. They are frequently loaded with sugar, which has been linked to a range of health issues, including weight gain and type 2 diabetes. The high sugar content and acidity can also
be harsh on your teeth, contributing to enamel erosion and cavities. Even diet versions, while free of sugar, remain highly acidic and may disrupt metabolism. Making a conscious choice to reduce soda intake is a positive step towards better overall wellness. The good news is that the alternatives are not just healthier, but also more flavourful and hydrating.
The Tangy Treasure: Kokum Cooler
Hailing from the Western Ghats of India, kokum (Garcinia indica) is a small, purple-red fruit celebrated for its unique tangy flavour and cooling properties. Traditionally consumed to beat the heat and aid digestion, kokum is a powerhouse of benefits. It's rich in antioxidants and has been used in Ayurvedic practices for its anti-inflammatory and digestive-soothing qualities. The active compound, garcinol, is noted for these properties, making a kokum cooler more than just a tasty drink—it's a restorative tonic. Its beautiful, natural pink hue makes it an appealing drink for all ages, without any artificial colours.
Quick and Easy Kokum Sherbet
Making this refreshing cooler is remarkably simple. For the fastest method, use store-bought kokum concentrate. Just add two to three tablespoons of the concentrate to a glass, top with chilled water or soda water, and stir. For a more traditional approach, you can create your own concentrate from dried kokum. Soak about 12-15 pieces of dried kokum in warm water for at least an hour, or overnight. Mash the softened pieces to release their pulp and strain the liquid into a pan. Add a sweetener like jaggery, a pinch of black salt, and roasted cumin powder. Gently heat the mixture until the jaggery dissolves, then let it cool. This homemade concentrate can be stored in the refrigerator for easy access whenever you crave a refreshing drink.
The All-Time Favourite: Mint Lemonade
Mint lemonade, or 'nimbu pudina pani', is a classic Indian cooler for good reason. It is the ultimate thirst-quencher on a hot day, delivering an instant burst of freshness. The benefits go beyond its taste. Lemon is an excellent source of Vitamin C, a powerful antioxidant that supports the immune system, while mint (pudina) is known for its digestive benefits, helping to soothe the stomach and freshen your breath. Together, they create a hydrating drink that helps flush out toxins and keeps you feeling energised. It’s a simple, natural way to stay hydrated and give your body a gentle wellness boost.
How to Make the Perfect Mint Lemonade
Whipping up a glass of mint lemonade takes just a few minutes. In a blender, combine a handful of fresh mint leaves (about half a cup), the juice of three lemons, sugar or another sweetener to taste, and a pinch of salt or black salt (kala namak) for that authentic desi flavour. Add a cup of cold water and blend until the mint is finely chopped and everything is well combined. Pour the mixture into glasses filled with ice cubes, top with more cold water, and garnish with a lemon slice and a sprig of mint. For a fun twist, you can also add a pinch of chaat masala or roasted cumin powder.
