The Menalon Trail: A Certified Classic
Deep in the Peloponnese region of Arcadia lies the Menalon Trail, a 75-kilometre path that was the first in Greece to be certified by the European Ramblers' Association. This trail isn't a modern invention; it follows ancient mule tracks that for centuries
connected remote mountain villages. The route is divided into eight sections, passing through stone-built towns like Stemnitsa and Dimitsana. The real magic lies in the Lousios Gorge, where monasteries cling impossibly to cliff faces. Hikers can visit the 17th-century New Philosophou Monastery and the ruins of the Old Philosophou Monastery, which dates back to 963 AD and once served as a secret school. This trek is a journey through a landscape that ancient Greeks considered a paradise, home to the god Pan.
The Corfu Trail: An Island Journey
Stretching over 200 kilometres from south to north, the Corfu Trail offers a completely different flavour of Greek hiking. It guides walkers through the island's diverse landscapes, from the sandy dunes of the south to the rugged cliffs and olive groves of the north. Along the way, the path reveals a layered history far from the bustling tourist resorts. You'll encounter crumbling 18th-century monasteries, Byzantine fortresses like Angelokastro perched on dramatic sea cliffs, and traditional villages that seem untouched by time. The trail is broken into stages, allowing for day hikes or a multi-day trek, with overnight stays in quiet villages. It’s an intimate way to experience the island’s heritage, where ancient donkey tracks (kalderimi) lead you past old olive presses and secluded chapels.
Crete's E4 Path: Gorges and Coastlines
The European long-distance path E4 crosses the length of Crete, offering a wild and dramatic hiking experience of approximately 500 kilometres. This trail showcases the island's raw beauty, from the famous Samaria Gorge, one of Europe's longest, to pristine coastal paths along the Libyan Sea. While hiking sections of the E4, you will stumble upon archaeological remnants of Crete's long history. Near the coastal village of Agia Roumeli, you can find the archaeological site of Tarra, an ancient village that once minted its own coins. Further along the southern coast, the path leads to the abandoned ancient town of Lissos, an evocative site with ruins that speak of past civilizations. The trail also passes near Venetian and Ottoman fortresses that were built on strategic hilltops, offering panoramic views.
Mount Olympus: A Walk with the Gods
No list of Greek trails is complete without Mount Olympus, the mythical home of the twelve Olympian gods. Hiking here is a blend of natural adventure and mythological immersion. Trails on Olympus range from easy family walks through the Enipeas Gorge to challenging multi-day ascents to Mytikas, the highest peak at 2,918 meters. The most popular route to the summit begins at Prionia. As you walk, you're treading on sacred ground, following paths that echo with tales of Zeus, Hera, and Apollo. Near the foot of the mountain lies the important archaeological site of Dion, the ancient Macedonians' sacred city. A hike on Olympus isn't just about the physical climb; it's about connecting with a landscape that has inspired stories for millennia.
Know Before You Go
Hiking in Greece offers incredible rewards, but preparation is key. The best seasons are spring (April-June) and autumn (September-October), when the weather is pleasant and the landscape is at its most vibrant. Summer can be extremely hot, especially on exposed trails in the south. Trails vary widely in difficulty and signage. While certified routes like the Menalon Trail are well-marked, others, like parts of the E4 in Crete, can be overgrown and require a GPS or a detailed map. Always carry plenty of water, sun protection, and wear sturdy hiking shoes. For challenging routes like the summit of Mount Olympus, consider hiring a guide, especially for the final, more technical scramble. Finally, embrace the local culture; stopping at a village 'kafeneio' for a rest is part of the authentic Greek hiking experience.
