A New Standard for On-Board Cleanliness
One of the most noticeable changes is the introduction of enhanced on-board services in several key superfast trains, including Vande Bharat Express services. This initiative, which makes NFR the second zonal railway in the country to implement such a system,
focuses on maintaining higher standards of hygiene throughout the journey. Dedicated teams are now responsible for regular coach and AC window cleaning, improved washroom maintenance, and efficient waste management. This tech-supported system includes digital monitoring, geo-tagged service verification, and even staff tracking to ensure accountability. For passengers, this means a cleaner environment from start to finish.
Smarter Services and Faster Complaint Resolution
Beyond cleanliness, technology is making the entire travel experience more responsive. The new service model includes a commitment to address passenger complaints within a target of two hours. Issues like water availability or basic technical problems are handled by on-board teams, and any unresolved issues are quickly escalated to relevant railway authorities. To ensure the system works, NFR is using real-time passenger feedback, star ratings, and even AI-based cleaning assessments to evaluate performance. This data-driven approach helps railway officials identify and fix service gaps efficiently, moving away from traditional methods and towards a more modern, accountable system.
Upgrades at the Station
The passenger experience is being improved well before you even board the train. To reduce long queues, NFR has been installing Automatic Ticket Vending Machines (ATVMs) at dozens of stations, allowing passengers to buy unreserved tickets using smart cards or QR codes. For better accessibility, particularly for elderly and differently-abled passengers, dozens of lifts and escalators have been installed across major stations like Guwahati, New Jalpaiguri, and Agartala. Furthermore, Integrated Passenger Information Systems have been set up at several stations, providing clear, real-time information about train schedules and platforms, reducing confusion and anxiety for travellers.
Invisible Tech for a Safer Journey
Some of the most critical technological upgrades happen behind the scenes. NFR has been strengthening safety by installing modern signalling equipment like 'Thick Web Switch Point' machines, which enhance the safety of track switching. It has also laid kilometres of new signalling cable and commissioned automatic fire detection and alarm systems at various stations. In a unique initiative to protect the region's rich biodiversity, NFR is deploying an acoustic-based Intrusion Detection System (IDS) in elephant corridors. This system uses optical fibre cables to detect the vibrations of an elephant herd near the tracks and sends an immediate alert to train drivers, preventing tragic collisions. These unseen systems are vital for ensuring that every journey is not just comfortable, but also fundamentally safer.
