From Pet Ownership to Pet Parenting
Not long ago, owning a pet in India was a relatively straightforward affair. Today, the dynamic has fundamentally changed. A growing number of urban households now see their pets not as animals, but as integral family members. This cultural shift is fuelling
a massive boom in the pet care industry, projected to grow from around ₹30,434 crore in 2024 to ₹2.1 lakh crore by 2032. The modern Indian pet owner, often a millennial or Gen Z individual, is now a 'pet parent' who prioritises their companion's health, wellness, and happiness, creating a vibrant market for premium products and services that extend far beyond a simple bag of kibble.
The Real Cost of a Furry Friend
For first-time owners, the initial excitement can sometimes overshadow the long-term financial commitment. The adoption or purchase fee, which can range from nothing at a shelter to over ₹1,00,000 for a pedigree breed, is just the beginning. Initial setup costs, including vaccinations, sterilisation, bowls, and bedding, can easily add another ₹15,000 to ₹30,000 in the first month. Monthly recurring expenses are where the real planning is needed. These include food, which can cost anywhere from ₹1,500 to over ₹7,000 a month depending on the brand and pet's size, as well as grooming, tick prevention, and regular vet check-ups. For a medium-sized dog, owners can expect to spend between ₹4,000 to ₹7,000 monthly for mid-range care.
A Taste of the Good Life: Premium Nutrition
The biggest shift is visible in pet nutrition. Discerning pet parents are moving away from home-cooked meals towards scientifically formulated options. The demand for premium and super-premium pet food is growing at over 20% annually. This includes grain-free diets, which saw a 152% surge in searches, and wet food, which now accounts for nearly 45% of total pet food purchases on some platforms. Speciality stores, which offer expert advice and curated products, have become a major channel, reflecting a consumer base that is willing to pay more for quality ingredients and health-specific formulations.
Beyond the Basics: Grooming, Daycare, and Spas
The new pet economy thrives on services that mirror human lifestyle choices. Professional grooming, once a luxury, is now a regular expense for many, with services ranging from basic baths to specialised spa treatments like aromatherapy and de-shedding. A single grooming session can cost between ₹500 and ₹2,500. For busy urban professionals, services like dog walkers (₹2,000 to ₹6,000 per month) and pet boarding or daycare (₹500 to ₹2,000 per night) have become essential. These services ensure pets are well-cared for, socialised, and stimulated even when their owners are at work or travelling.
Planning for the Unexpected: The Rise of Pet Insurance
With advancements in veterinary care, the cost of treatments has also risen significantly. An emergency surgery can cost anywhere from ₹20,000 to over ₹1,00,000. This has spurred the growth of the pet insurance market in India, which is expected to grow at a compound annual growth rate of over 19%. Though currently less than 1% of pets are insured, awareness is growing rapidly. Policies cover accidents, illnesses, and sometimes even therapeutic diets, providing a financial safety net and ensuring that pet parents can make decisions based on their pet's health needs rather than cost.
