From Pet Owner to Pet Parent
The single biggest driver of this change is the 'humanization' of pets. Across India's urban centres, a significant emotional shift is underway where pets are no longer just animals, but cherished family members. This is especially true for millennials
and Gen Z, who often live in nuclear families and have moved to cities for work. For this generation, pets provide crucial companionship and emotional support. This changing dynamic means they are often referred to as 'pet parents' rather than 'pet owners'. More than half of Indian pet owners now see their pets as integral family members, with some viewing them as their own children. This shift in mindset directly influences spending habits, as they seek to provide their furry 'children' with the best care possible, mirroring their own lifestyle choices.
The Wellness Wave Reaches the Dog Bowl
Millennials, who are highly conscious of their own health and wellness, are now extending that focus to their pets. The same principles that guide their own food choices—natural ingredients, minimal processing, and transparent sourcing—are what they now look for in pet food. This has fuelled a surge in demand for premium pet foods made with high-quality, natural, and even 'human-grade' ingredients. The logic is simple: if they are eating clean, shouldn't their pets do the same? This has paved the way for a new market of brands offering gently cooked meals that look more like home-cooked food than traditional brown pellets. These meals are often free from artificial preservatives, fillers like corn and soy, and vague by-products that many health-conscious consumers are keen to avoid.
What Exactly is Fresh Dog Food?
Unlike heavily processed dry kibble, which is manufactured at high temperatures, fresh dog food is made from whole-food ingredients that are gently cooked to preserve nutrients. Think of it as the difference between a bag of chips and a freshly prepared salad. Fresh food typically contains recognizable ingredients like lean meats, vegetables, and whole grains. One of its main advantages is its high moisture content—often over 65% compared to around 10% in kibble—which helps keep dogs hydrated, a key concern in India's warmer climate. Vets note that this type of food is also highly digestible, meaning dogs can absorb more nutrients from their meals. This often results in better digestion, improved skin and coat health, and higher energy levels.
The Allure of Customization
Beyond just being 'fresh', the element of customization is a major draw for discerning pet parents. Several direct-to-consumer startups now offer meals tailored to a dog's specific needs, taking into account their breed, age, weight, activity level, and any health issues like allergies or a sensitive stomach. After filling out a detailed questionnaire online, a pet parent can get a subscription plan for meals that are pre-portioned and delivered to their doorstep. This level of personalization resonates with millennial consumers who are used to customized solutions in other areas of their lives, from streaming services to fashion. It provides a sense of control and assurance that they are providing the optimal diet for their pet's unique requirements.
A Metro-Centric Trend
This trend is predominantly concentrated in major metropolitan cities like Mumbai, Delhi, and Bangalore. There are several reasons for this. Urban centres have a higher concentration of millennial professionals with higher disposable incomes and a greater exposure to global trends through social media. The infrastructure for such services, including reliable cold-chain delivery and e-commerce platforms, is also more developed in these areas. For many in nuclear family setups or living alone, the emotional investment in a pet is particularly high, making the premium price point for fresh food feel like a worthwhile expenditure on a family member's well-being.
