A New Era of Connectivity
The Railway Board has approved the introduction of a new semi-high-speed Vande Bharat Express that will directly connect Surat in Gujarat with Udaipur in Rajasthan. Operated by Western Railway, this train service is a significant development for the region,
enhancing the link between two major commercial and tourist hubs. This will be the first Vande Bharat service for Surat and is expected to provide a substantial boost to business travel and tourism, especially ahead of the festive season. The service effectively extends the previous Udaipur-Asarva route, creating a longer and more impactful connection for passengers in both states.
Route, Stoppages, and Timings
The train will operate six days a week, excluding Tuesdays. The journey covers a distance of approximately 690 kilometres in about 7 hours and 30 minutes. Train number 26903 will depart from Surat at 6:10 AM and is scheduled to arrive in Udaipur City at 1:40 PM. For the return journey, train number 26904 will leave Udaipur City at 3:35 PM and reach Surat at 11:00 PM. The train has nine official stops between the two cities: Bharuch, Vadodara, Anand, Maninagar, Asarva, Himmatnagar, Shamlaji Road, Dungarpur, and Zawar. These stops are strategically placed to serve key industrial towns and population centres across Gujarat and southern Rajasthan.
The Onboard Vande Bharat Experience
Passengers on the Surat-Udaipur Vande Bharat will travel in modern, eight-coach rakes designed for comfort and speed. These trains are fully air-conditioned and offer two classes of seating: AC Chair Car and Executive Chair Car. Executive class features wider, rotating seats in a 2x2 configuration, while the standard chair car has a 2x3 layout. Amenities include onboard Wi-Fi for infotainment, GPS-based passenger information systems, automatic doors, and bio-vacuum toilets with sensor-based taps. Each seat is equipped with a reading light and a mobile charging socket. The train's large windows offer panoramic views, and onboard catering services will be available to passengers.
Economic and Tourism Impact
The introduction of this high-speed service is poised to have a considerable economic impact. For traders and business professionals in Surat's textile and diamond industries, it offers a faster and more comfortable mode of travel to markets in Rajasthan. For the tourism sector, the direct link makes Udaipur's palaces, lakes, and cultural heritage more accessible to visitors from South and Central Gujarat. The improved connectivity is also expected to benefit residents of smaller towns along the route, such as Himmatnagar and Dungarpur, by providing them with a premium travel option to major urban centres. The service is seen as a crucial step in strengthening the economic ties between the Mewar region of Rajasthan and the industrial belt of Gujarat.
