Planning and Visa-Free Entry
As of mid-2026, Sri Lanka offers a free Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) for tourists from India, which is a fantastic cost-saver. While the process is free, it's crucial to apply for and receive your ETA online before you travel; this is not a visa-on-arrival
facility. This free ETA is valid for 30 days and allows for double entry. For a 5-day shoestring budget, aim for approximately ₹2,500-₹4,000 per day, excluding flights. This will comfortably cover hostel stays, local food, and public transport. Booking flights to Colombo (CMB) a few months in advance and travelling during the shoulder seasons (like September-November or April-May) can significantly reduce costs. Pack light clothing, a rain jacket for unexpected showers, comfortable walking shoes, and plenty of sunscreen.
Day 1: Arrival and the Charms of Kandy
Upon arriving at Colombo's Bandaranaike International Airport, your most budget-friendly option to get to Kandy is the train from Fort Station. A second-class ticket for this scenic 2.5 to 3-hour journey offers a great balance of comfort and value. After checking into a budget-friendly hostel or guesthouse (which can cost as little as $6-15 per night), spend your evening with a leisurely, free stroll around the beautiful Kandy Lake. For dinner, skip the tourist-centric restaurants and dive into a local eatery, often called a 'hotel', for an authentic and inexpensive rice and curry meal, which can cost under LKR 1,500.
Day 2: Kandy's Cultural Heart
Dedicate your morning to Kandy’s most famous site, the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic (Sri Dalada Maligawa). While there's an entrance fee for foreigners, it's a key cultural experience. To save money for the rest of the day, explore the bustling Kandy Central Market for a sensory overload of local life. For a panoramic view of the city without an entrance fee, consider a hike up to the Bahirawakanda Vihara Buddha Statue viewpoint. Throughout the day, rely on local buses or simply walk, as Kandy is a very walkable city for those with a bit of stamina. Eating street food like kottu roti for dinner is another excellent way to keep costs down while enjoying a local favourite.
Day 3: Journey to the Coast – Mirissa Bound
Today involves travelling from the hill country to the southern coast. The most economical way to get from Kandy to Mirissa is by taking a bus. This will likely involve a change in Colombo, with the total journey taking around 6 to 8 hours. While it’s a long travel day, the changing landscapes from lush hills to coastal plains are part of the adventure. Upon arrival in Mirissa, check into one of the many affordable guesthouses or hostels located a short walk from the beach. Spend the late afternoon relaxing on the main Mirissa beach, watching the surfers and the sunset. For dinner, the beachfront restaurants offer fresh seafood, which can be a slight splurge, but many smaller eateries just off the main road offer cheaper and equally delicious meals.
Day 4: Sun, Sand, and Scenery in Mirissa
Mirissa is famous for whale watching (best from December to April), but tours can be pricey. If it's outside your budget, don't worry. A fantastic and free alternative is to spend the morning exploring Mirissa’s stunning viewpoints. A short walk will take you to the iconic Coconut Tree Hill for that perfect Instagram shot. Afterwards, find your way to Secret Beach, a quieter cove perfect for swimming and relaxing away from the main crowds. Snorkelling with turtles near the shore is another low-cost activity. You can spend the entire day enjoying these natural attractions for free, soaking up the sun and the laid-back beach vibe that makes Mirissa a backpacker favourite.
Day 5: A Final Beach Morning and Departure
Enjoy a final Sri Lankan breakfast and a last walk on the beach. Depending on your flight schedule, you could take a quick bus ride to the nearby Galle Fort for a few hours of exploring its historic, UNESCO-listed streets before heading back towards Colombo. The journey from Mirissa back to the airport can be done via bus to Colombo and then a connecting bus or taxi to the airport. Be sure to allow ample travel time, at least 4-5 hours. This completes a whirlwind tour that beautifully contrasts the cultural soul of Kandy with the blissful beaches of Mirissa, all without breaking the bank.
