Planning Your Konkan Coastal Drive
The true Konkan coastal drive isn't on the faster NH-66 (Mumbai-Goa highway) but on the narrower, more intimate Maharashtra State Highway 4 (MSH-4), also known as the Sagari Mahamarg. This route hugs the coastline, weaving through sleepy fishing villages,
dense coconut groves, and across river creeks where ferries carry you and your car. The best time for this journey is between October and March, when the weather is pleasant and the post-monsoon greenery is at its peak. Before you start, ensure your vehicle is in good condition, as the roads can be narrow and challenging in patches. Pack light, but keep essentials like a first-aid kit, power bank, and offline maps, as mobile connectivity can be spotty in remote areas.
Leg 1: Mumbai to the Raigad Coast
Your journey begins with an escape from Mumbai. To bypass city traffic, consider the Ro-Ro ferry from Mumbai's Ferry Wharf to Mandwa. This drops you near Alibaug, a popular coastal town often called the “Goa of Maharashtra”. Explore Alibaug Beach and the historic Kolaba Fort, which is accessible by foot during low tide. Driving south from Alibaug, you'll pass the pristine white sands of Kashid Beach before reaching Murud. The main attraction here is the formidable Murud-Janjira Fort, a 17th-century sea fortress that remained unconquered throughout its history and is reachable by a short boat ride. Further down, the towns of Shrivardhan and Harihareshwar offer a blend of spiritual sites and serene beaches. Harihareshwar, known as the "House of God," is surrounded by hills and features a revered temple alongside its tranquil shore.
Leg 2: Through Ratnagiri's Heartland
This section of the drive takes you into the heart of Konkan. From Harihareshwar, you will likely need to use a ferry to cross the creek towards the Ratnagiri district. The route leads to Dapoli, a town known for its agricultural richness and access to several quiet beaches like Murud (not to be confused with the one near Alibaug) and Harnai, a bustling fishing harbour. The drive from Dapoli to Ganpatipule is arguably one of the most picturesque stretches, with winding roads offering breathtaking clifftop views of the Arabian Sea. Ganpatipule itself is famous for its 400-year-old Ganpati temple located right on a clean, white-sand beach. This region is also the heart of Alphonso mango country, a must-try if you're travelling between April and June.
Leg 3: Sindhudurg's Southern Charms
As you continue south towards Goa, you enter the Sindhudurg district. Ratnagiri town, the mango capital, is a worthwhile stop to visit Thiba Palace and its lighthouse. The journey further south takes you towards Malvan and Tarkarli. Malvan is a culturally rich town and the gateway to the magnificent Sindhudurg Fort, a sea fort built by Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. Nearby Tarkarli is renowned for its crystal-clear waters, making it a prime destination for snorkelling and scuba diving. The tranquil Devbagh Beach and the unique Tsunami Island are other key attractions here, offering a perfect blend of history, adventure, and natural beauty.
A Taste of Authentic Konkan Cuisine
A road trip through Konkan is incomplete without savouring its distinctive cuisine. Seafood is the star, with preparations like Surmai (Kingfish) Tawa Fry, crispy Bombil (Bombay Duck) Fry, and various fish curries made with a coconut and kokum base. A quintessential non-vegetarian meal is Kombdi Vade, a spicy chicken curry served with fluffy, deep-fried rice-flour bread. For vegetarians, there are ample delights like Ghavan (a soft rice pancake similar to a dosa), Fanas Bhaji (jackfruit curry), and Bharli Vangi (stuffed aubergines). Every meal is perfectly complemented by a glass of Sol Kadhi, a refreshing and digestive drink made from coconut milk and kokum. For the most authentic experience, stop at small, family-run eateries called 'Khanavals' along the way.
