A New Era of Train Travel
Enter the Vande Bharat Express, a name that's quickly becoming synonymous with a modern, elevated travel experience in India. First launched in 2019, this semi-high-speed train was designed to offer a significant upgrade in speed, comfort, and service,
challenging the notion of what public rail travel can be. Unlike traditional trains, the Vande Bharat is a self-propelled, engine-less trainset, which allows for faster acceleration and a smoother, quieter ride. The experience feels different from the moment you step on the platform; there's a palpable sense of stepping into the future of Indian Railways.
An Airline-Style Cabin on Rails
The interiors of the Vande Bharat are where the sense of luxury truly becomes apparent. Designed with a clean, modern aesthetic similar to an airplane cabin, the coaches are spacious and fully air-conditioned. Passengers can choose between standard Chair Car (CC) and the more premium Executive Class (EC). Even in the standard class, seats are ergonomic, comfortable, and offer generous legroom. Large, continuous windows provide panoramic views, turning the journey itself into a scenic experience. Executive Class takes it a step further with wider, reclining seats that can rotate 180 degrees, allowing you to face the window or socialise with fellow travellers.
Modern Amenities and Thoughtful Details
The premium feel is reinforced by a host of modern amenities. Automatic plug doors, fully sealed gangways for easy movement between coaches, and sensor-based taps in the bio-vacuum toilets all contribute to a cleaner, more hygienic environment. For the connected traveller, every seat is equipped with its own charging socket. A GPS-based passenger information system displays real-time updates on speed and upcoming stations on LED screens inside the coach. Safety is also a key focus, with CCTV cameras in all coaches and an advanced collision avoidance system known as Kavach.
A Culinary Journey
Onboard catering is another area where the Vande Bharat service aims to impress. Meals are often included in the ticket price and are a significant step up from standard railway fare. Depending on the route and time of day, passengers are served a curated menu that can include breakfast, lunch, dinner, and snacks. In a move to further enhance quality, IRCTC has even started trials with branded food partners like Haldiram's on select routes, bringing restaurant-quality meals directly to your seat. From welcome drinks to multi-course meals served hot, the dining experience is designed to be a highlight of the trip.
Beyond the Chair Car: The Sleeper Revolution
While the chair-car versions have redefined daytime travel, the next evolution is the Vande Bharat Sleeper. Designed for overnight journeys, these trains promise to bring the same level of luxury to long-distance routes. The first prototypes showcase elegant interiors, improved berth ergonomics, and enclosed cabins for greater privacy. Instead of steep ladders, dedicated staircases provide safer access to upper berths. With features like advanced suspension for a smoother ride and carefully designed ambient lighting, these sleeper trains are poised to become a preferred alternative to flights for many travellers.
