The Great Wait: A Tale of Five Cities
For first-time B1/B2 visitor visa applicants, the interview appointment wait can feel like a lottery. As of mid-2026, the variation across India's five US consular posts—New Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata, and Hyderabad—is stark. While the post-pandemic
backlog has eased from its peak of over 800 days, significant delays persist. Typically, major hubs like Mumbai and Delhi see the longest queues for visitor visas, sometimes stretching from 150 to 300 days. In contrast, cities like Kolkata and Chennai have often presented shorter waiting periods. For example, some recent data showed Chennai's wait time hovering around four months, while Mumbai's was closer to seven. These numbers are estimates and can change weekly, but the trend is clear: your choice of city is a critical planning variable.
Why Don't All Consulates Have the Same Wait Time?
Several factors contribute to the differing wait times across India. The primary drivers are local demand and consular capacity. Cities like Mumbai and New Delhi handle an immense volume of applications, not just for tourism but also for business and student visas. Furthermore, each consulate has a different mix of staffing levels and priorities. Some posts, like Chennai, have historically been major hubs for processing H-1B and L work visas, while Hyderabad is a key center for student and IT-related applications. The U.S. Mission in India also strategically prioritizes certain visa categories, especially student visas (F-1) between May and August, to ensure students can start their academic years on time. This can lead to fewer available slots for B1/B2 applicants during those peak periods in cities with high student traffic.
The 'Travel to Apply' Strategy
Given these disparities, a growing number of applicants are employing a 'travel to apply' strategy. The good news is that Indian applicants are generally permitted to schedule their visa interview at any of the five consulates, regardless of their place of residence. This flexibility allows a resident of Mumbai, facing a potential seven-month wait, to book an appointment in Kolkata or Chennai if they offer a slot in four months. While this involves the additional cost and logistics of traveling to another city for the interview, it can cut the waiting period significantly. However, this strategy requires diligence. Applicants must constantly monitor the official U.S. visa scheduling portal for appointment availability, as slots open up dynamically due to cancellations or the addition of new capacity.
Smarter Planning: Beyond Just Picking a City
While city-shopping for appointments is a valid tactic, other strategies can also streamline your planning. First and foremost, apply as early as possible. For visitor visas, planning 6 to 12 months in advance of your intended travel date is now a recommended practice. Secondly, check if you are eligible for the Interview Waiver Program, commonly known as the 'dropbox' option. This allows eligible individuals, typically those renewing a recent visa in the same category, to submit their documents without an in-person interview, cutting the process down to a few weeks. Finally, remember that the published wait times are estimates. The actual availability on the booking portal is the only number that truly matters, and checking it frequently for newly opened or cancelled slots can sometimes yield a much earlier date than expected.
