A Monsoon Paradise in the Sahyadris
Nestled in Maharashtra's Ahmednagar district, Bhandardara is a serene hill station that truly comes alive between June and September. During these monsoon months, the region sheds its dry summer skin and dons a vibrant green coat. The landscape, surrounded
by the majestic Sahyadri mountain range, becomes a playground of overflowing lakes, roaring waterfalls, and cloud-kissed peaks, making it a favourite weekend getaway for those seeking solace in nature. The air is fresh, the climate is cool, and every view is a picture-perfect moment waiting to be captured.
Getting There from Mumbai
Reaching this secluded spot is part of the adventure. Bhandardara is approximately 165-185 km from Mumbai, making it accessible for a road trip. The drive itself is scenic, taking you along winding ghat roads. For those preferring rail, the nearest station is Igatpuri, about 45 km away. From Igatpuri, one can easily hire a local taxi or take a state transport bus to complete the journey into the hills. A combination of a train to Igatpuri followed by a taxi is often the most convenient way to travel without a personal car.
The Heart of Bhandardara: Wilson Dam and Arthur Lake
The centrepiece of the region is the expansive Arthur Lake, formed by the waters of the Pravara River held back by the historic Wilson Dam. Built in 1910, the dam is an engineering marvel of its time. During the monsoon, when the sluice gates are opened, the sight is spectacular. The vast, placid waters of Arthur Lake are perfect for quiet contemplation or a boat ride, reflecting the green hills and misty skies like a mirror. Just below the dam, the famous Umbrella Falls comes to life, a seasonal cascade that gets its name from its unique shape as water spills over the rocks.
Chasing Roaring Waterfalls
Bhandardara is a land of waterfalls, especially during the rains. The most iconic is Randha Falls, where the Pravara River plunges 170 feet into a gorge, creating a powerful and thunderous spectacle. Viewpoints nearby allow you to feel the cool mist on your face. Beyond the famous ones, the region is dotted with numerous other cascades. Adventurous travellers can seek out hidden gems like Vasundhara Waterfall, Koltembhe Waterfall (nicknamed the 'Bahubali Waterfall' for its size), and Necklace Waterfall, each offering a more secluded experience away from the main tourist spots.
For the Adventurous: Treks and Ancient Forts
This region is a trekker's delight. It serves as the base for the ascent to Mount Kalsubai, which at 5,400 feet is the highest peak in Maharashtra. The trek is challenging but rewards climbers with unparalleled panoramic views. Another popular trek leads to the 400-year-old Ratangad Fort, perched dramatically on a hill. The fort, often called the 'Jewel of the Forts', features ancient caves, water cisterns, and a unique natural rock formation at its peak with a cavity known as 'Nedhe' or the 'Eye of the Needle'. The views of the surrounding valley from the top are simply breathtaking.
A Glimpse into Ancient History
Bhandardara isn't just about natural beauty; it's also steeped in history. Tucked away in the village of Ratanwadi, at the base of Ratangad, lies the Amruteshwar Temple. This ancient temple dedicated to Lord Shiva is believed to be over 1,200 years old, built in the distinctive Hemadpanti architectural style with intricate rock carvings. According to legend, the area is also associated with the sage Agastya, who is said to have meditated here for a year. Visiting the temple offers a peaceful and spiritual contrast to the region's more adventurous pursuits.
