From Government Monopoly to Private Playground
For decades, a career in India's space sector meant one thing: securing a coveted job at the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO). But the landscape has dramatically shifted. Since the government opened the sector to private enterprise in 2020, the number
of space startups has skyrocketed from just one in 2014 to over 400 by mid-2026. This explosion is facilitated by IN-SPACe (Indian National Space Promotion and Authorisation Centre), a single-window agency created to enable and supervise private space activities. This policy shift allows ISRO to focus on advanced research and development for national missions, while private companies scale up mature technologies like rocket manufacturing and satellite services. The goal is to grow India’s share of the global space economy from its current 2-3% to over 8% in the next decade, potentially creating an industry worth over $40 billion.
The New Job Constellation: Beyond the Obvious
The modern space industry is about far more than just astronauts and rocket scientists. The real growth is in a diverse array of technical and non-technical roles. Companies like Skyroot Aerospace and Agnikul Cosmos are hiring propulsion, avionics, and structural engineers to build their own launch vehicles. Meanwhile, firms like Pixxel and Dhruva Space are focused on building satellite constellations, creating demand for satellite systems engineers with expertise in power systems, thermal management, and orbital mechanics. One of the fastest-growing domains isn't even about building hardware; it's about interpreting the data sent back to Earth. This has created a surge in demand for data scientists, remote sensing engineers, and GIS analysts who can turn raw satellite imagery into actionable insights for agriculture, climate monitoring, and urban planning.
Specialised Roles in High Demand
As the ecosystem matures, highly specialised roles are emerging. With hundreds of new satellites being launched, space traffic management is a critical field pioneered by startups like Digantara, which tracks space debris to ensure the safety of operational satellites. The manufacturing process itself is getting a high-tech upgrade, with companies like Agnikul Cosmos using 3D printing to create entire rocket engines, requiring specialists in additive manufacturing and materials science. Even non-engineering roles are becoming crucial. The commercialisation of space requires experts in space law to navigate international treaties and intellectual property, while finance and marketing professionals are needed to manage long-term, high-risk space ventures. There's also a nascent but growing field for space medicine and life sciences, spurred by India's human spaceflight ambitions with the Gaganyaan mission.
Who's Hiring and What Skills Do You Need?
The new recruiters in town are well-funded startups, now seen as serious career destinations. Skyroot Aerospace, Agnikul Cosmos, Pixxel, and Dhruva Space are among the most active hirers. These companies are looking for a blend of skills. While a B.Tech in aerospace, mechanical, or electronics engineering remains a common entry point, proficiency in software is a significant advantage. Coding skills in Python and C++, especially for simulation, data analysis, and developing embedded systems, are highly sought after. Unlike traditional government hiring, private startups often value hands-on experience from student projects—like building CubeSats or model rockets—as much as academic grades. This shift means that a career in space is more accessible than ever, with entry-level salaries at private firms ranging from ₹10 lakh to ₹25 lakh per annum for engineering roles.
