What Exactly Is the Chair-Stand Test?
While it may be trending on social media, the 30-second chair-stand test is far from a fad. For years, it has been a trusted tool used by physical therapists and doctors to assess functional lower-body strength, particularly in older adults. Originally
developed in 1999 as part of the Fullerton Functional Fitness Test, it measures the number of times a person can stand up from a chair and sit back down in 30 seconds without using their hands. The result provides a surprisingly accurate snapshot of leg strength, endurance, and balance—all critical components for maintaining independence and mobility as we age.
How to Perform the Test Correctly
You only need a sturdy chair with a straight back (and no arms) and a stopwatch. A standard dining chair with a seat height of about 17 inches is ideal. To ensure safety, place the chair against a wall so it won’t slide. 1. Sit in the middle of the chair with your feet flat on the floor, about shoulder-width apart. Your back should be straight. 2. Cross your arms over your chest, with your hands on your opposite shoulders. 3. When ready, start the timer and rise to a full standing position, then immediately begin to sit back down in a controlled manner. 4. Repeat this sit-to-stand motion as many times as you can in 30 seconds. Count a repetition only when you have returned to a seated position. 5. If you are more than halfway up when the 30 seconds are over, you can count it as a full repetition. Importantly, if you need to use your hands to push off your legs or the chair at any point, your score is zero.
What Do Your Results Mean?
Your score is the total number of full stands you completed. This number can be compared against established norms to see how your lower-body strength stacks up for your age and gender. A score that is below average for your demographic may indicate an increased risk of falls and a decline in functional independence. According to data published by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), here are some of the “below average” thresholds that suggest a higher risk for falls: - Ages 60-64: Fewer than 14 for men, fewer than 12 for women. - Ages 70-74: Fewer than 12 for men, fewer than 10 for women. - Ages 80-84: Fewer than 10 for men, fewer than 9 for women. For adults aged 18 to 35, one study found an average of 33 repetitions, with more physically active individuals scoring higher. It’s a valuable benchmark at any age.
Why Lower-Body Strength Is So Important
Strong legs are a cornerstone of a long, healthy, and independent life. This isn't just about athletic performance; it's about the ability to perform daily activities with ease, such as getting out of a car, climbing stairs, or simply rising from the couch. Simple Ways to Improve Your Score
If your score wasn't what you hoped for, don't be discouraged. The test itself can be a great training exercise. Start by practicing the sit-to-stand movement slowly and with good form, focusing on control rather than speed. You can make it easier by starting with a higher chair or a cushion, and gradually moving to a lower surface as you get stronger. Incorporating a few targeted exercises into your routine can also make a big difference. Bodyweight squats (or chair squats), lunges, step-ups, and glute bridges are all excellent for building the necessary strength in your quads, glutes, and hamstrings. Even simple seated leg extensions and seated marching can help build foundational strength. Consistency is key, so aim for short, regular sessions a few times per week.
