Finland is once again opening its doors with a unique, all-expenses-paid travel opportunity. But what separates the thousands of applicants from the few who actually get to go? Here's how the 2027 Finnish Dinner Date trip really works.
What is the Finnish Dinner Date Trip?
Visit Finland, the
country's tourism board, has announced its latest creative campaign: the 'Finnish Dinner Date'. This isn't just a random giveaway; it's a carefully curated, all-expenses-paid, four-day trip for 16 single travellers from around the world. The experience is scheduled for February 2027 and is designed to introduce visitors to Finland's culture, lifestyle, and its lesser-known culinary scene. The trip will take winners to either the vibrant capital, Helsinki, or the city of Tampere, known as the gateway to Finland's serene Lakeland region. The highlight is a group dinner that brings the international visitors together with local Finnish singles for a special meal featuring an official regional tasting menu. It’s a cultural exchange framed as a friendly, low-pressure blind date.
The Inspiration: A Shopping Cart for Singles
The idea for the trip was sparked by a quirky and charming Finnish trend known as 'sinkkukori', or the 'single basket'. In some supermarkets, shoppers who are single and open to meeting new people can opt for a distinctly coloured shopping basket to signal their status. This quiet, unassuming way of making a connection resonated with Visit Finland, which adapted the concept into an international tourism campaign. It reflects a core part of the Finnish character: sincere, a little reserved, but open to genuine connection. The campaign aims to introduce the world to Finnish food culture, which Heli Jimenez of Business Finland describes as a way of 'connecting to place, to season, and to the people around you'.
How to Apply: More Than Just a Form
The application deadline is November 10, 2026, and the process is a two-step affair designed to reveal your personality. First, applicants must create a short video in English answering the question: 'What would you serve on a dinner date, and why?'. This video needs to be posted to Instagram, TikTok, or YouTube with the hashtag #FinnishDinnerDate and by tagging the official Visit Finland accounts. For those wary of public declarations, YouTube videos can be uploaded as 'unlisted'. The second step is to complete the official application form on the Visit Finland website and include the link to your video. Eligibility is simple: you must be a single adult aged 18 or over and not a resident of Finland.
The Secret Ingredient to Winning
This is not a lottery. A panel of judges evaluates the video submissions based on three key criteria: creativity, authenticity, and how personally you answer the question. Looking at Finland's past campaigns, like 'Rent a Finn' and the 'Masterclass of Happiness', a clear pattern emerges. The winners aren't necessarily the most polished influencers or aspiring travel bloggers. Instead, the judges look for a genuine, open-minded interest in the Finnish way of life. They want to see your real personality and a sincere curiosity about connecting with nature, embracing simplicity, and experiencing a different culture—not just a desire for a free vacation. Your answer about a dinner date should reflect thoughtfulness and authenticity, showing who you are and what you value. This is the crucial difference between simply applying and actually winning.
What the Experience Actually Includes
The 16 winners will have their roundtrip flights, accommodation, meals, and a full fourday itinerary completely covered. Eight winners will be assigned to Helsinki and eight to Tampere, with the destination being a surprise until confirmation. The trip, taking place between February 9 and 19, 2027, includes activities like sightseeing, outdoor excursions, and, of course, sauna visits. The main event is the group dinner, where each group of eight will be joined by two local singles. While promoted as a 'blind date', Visit Finland clarifies there is no formal matchmaking, and romance isn't guaranteed. The goal is to foster connections—whether romantic or platonic—through shared experiences centred around Finland's unique food and culture. The menus themselves are crafted by top chefs like Adele Kinnunen in Helsinki and Henry Tikkanen in Tampere.
