A recent survey released by the anonymous professional networking platform Blind has sent ripples through India's tech community. It found that 66% of AI and machine learning (ML) professionals expect layoffs or significant headcount reductions in their
teams within the next three to six months. This places AI/ML specialists nearly on par with sales and marketing staff (68%) in their anxiety about job security, challenging the long-held belief that AI-centric roles are immune to market volatility. The survey, conducted in July among 1,552 India-based professionals, indicates that the concern isn't based on formal layoff announcements, but on quieter signals like hiring freezes and budget cuts.
Why the Fear of Cuts in a Booming Field?
The paradox of layoff fears amid a boom is rooted in the evolution of AI itself. While the technology is creating more jobs than it eliminates, the nature of these jobs is changing rapidly. A recent Nomura report highlights that for every AI-related job lost in India, 2.6 new ones are created. However, the skills required for these new roles are different. Routine, entry-level tasks are being automated by more sophisticated AI. The jobs being lost in areas like basic data processing or running simple models are not the same as the new jobs being created, which demand advanced skills. This creates a skills gap, where displaced workers cannot easily transition into the new, higher-skilled roles, leading to friction in the job market.

According to NASSCOM, there's a significant demand-supply gap for talent in niche areas like LLM fine-tuning and AI agent design. These roles require more than just technical ability; they demand domain knowledge, critical thinking, and the ability to translate business problems into complex AI solutions. The focus is shifting from simply building models to orchestrating AI systems to deliver measurable business outcomes.
The New Skillset for AI Professionals
For jobseekers and current professionals, the message is clear: continuous upskilling is no longer optional. The most in-demand technical skills now include Python, SQL, and proficiency in frameworks like PyTorch or TensorFlow. However, soft skills and conceptual understanding are becoming equally crucial. Creativity, analytical thinking, problem-solving, and AI literacy are among the fastest-rising skills sought by Indian employers. Furthermore, skills that were once considered non-technical, such as prompt engineering and AI tool fluency, are now core competencies.
