The Old Model Is Under Pressure
India's rise as a global technology hub was built on a foundation of millions of skilled software engineers. The country's IT services giants perfected a model based on a large, cost-effective workforce that could write, test, and maintain code for clients
worldwide. This approach turned India into the world's outsourcing hub, employing over 5 million people and accounting for over half of the global IT outsourcing market. However, the very nature of this work is now being transformed by generative AI. Tools like GitHub Copilot can now generate nearly half of new code in some projects, automating tasks that were once the bread and butter of junior developers. This has led to a fundamental change: the role of the engineer is evolving from a creator of code to a supervisor and orchestrator of AI-driven development. While this isn't causing mass layoffs, it is leading to a slowdown in entry-level hiring as companies reassess their talent needs.
The Dawn of AI Fluency
The new currency in the tech world is 'AI fluency.' This goes far beyond knowing how to use a chatbot. It is a practical understanding of what AI can and cannot do, how to integrate AI models into business workflows, and how to use them to solve complex problems. Companies are no longer just looking for people who can code; they are searching for professionals who can direct, manage, and work alongside AI systems. Indian IT giants are pivoting their strategies to become AI integrators rather than developers of foundational models, focusing on high-value applications for their clients. This means the demand is for people with hybrid skills—those who combine domain expertise with data science and AI capabilities. This shift is so significant that AI skills have become the hardest-to-find talent for Indian employers, overtaking traditional engineering roles for the first time.
New Roles on the Tech Horizon
As old tasks get automated, new roles are emerging. The demand for specialised AI talent is booming, with job postings for roles like Machine Learning Engineer, Data Scientist, AI Specialist, and MLOps (Machine Learning Operations) Engineer seeing exponential growth. There's a significant talent gap, with some estimates suggesting there is only one skilled AI engineer for every ten open positions in the generative AI space. NASSCOM projects that India will need over a million AI professionals by 2026 to meet this demand. These new roles require a different skill set, including proficiency in Python, databases, and a deep understanding of mathematical and statistical concepts that underpin AI models. The focus is shifting from simply writing code to building, training, and deploying intelligent systems.
The Great Reskilling Mandate
In response to this evolution, the entire industry is in the midst of a massive reskilling effort. Major IT firms like TCS, Infosys, and Wipro are heavily investing in training their workforce. TCS reported that over 100,000 of its employees have already acquired advanced AI and machine learning skills. Similarly, Infosys has made over 270,000 of its staff “AI-aware.” These companies are running large-scale internal hackathons and training programs to embed AI literacy across all functions. Beyond corporate initiatives, there is a growing ecosystem of collaboration between companies, academia, and government bodies like NASSCOM to bridge the skills gap through certifications and project-based training. The message from employers is clear: they are increasingly prioritising demonstrable skills and a candidate's ability to learn over traditional academic credentials alone.
Human Skills in an AI World
Ironically, as technology becomes more capable, 'human' skills are becoming more valuable. While AI can write code, analyse data, and draft reports, it cannot walk into a client meeting, build trust, or lead a team through a complex project. Employers are placing a greater emphasis on soft skills like communication, critical thinking, problem-solving, and collaboration. A Deloitte report highlighted that the demand for candidates who combine technical fluency with strong interpersonal abilities is accelerating. The most valuable professionals in the AI era will be those who can leverage technology to automate tasks, freeing themselves up to focus on higher-order strategy, innovation, and client relationships. The future of Indian IT lies not in being replaced by AI, but in being enhanced by professionals who know how to master it.
