More Than a Physical Transformation
Portraying Lord Ram, the 'Maryada Purushottam', is a monumental task that demands more than just physical resemblance. For Ranbir Kapoor, the preparation for Nitesh Tiwari’s magnum opus, 'Ramayana', has been a journey of deep spiritual and mental discipline.
While physical changes are part of the process, Kapoor himself has emphasised that the internal work is far more crucial. Speaking at San Diego Comic-Con, the actor noted that while building a certain physique is relatively superficial, truly understanding the philosophy of Lord Ram was his primary focus. This involved a multi-year commitment to not just looking the part, but feeling and thinking it, aiming to connect with audiences of all ages.
Crafting a Divine Voice and Diction
One of the most distinct aspects of Ranbir Kapoor's screen presence is his recognisable voice and delivery style. Director Nitesh Tiwari was reportedly keen to ensure that his portrayal of Lord Ram sounds unique and distinct from any of his previous roles. To achieve this, a dedicated team was put in place to focus on the film's diction and dialogue. Kapoor has been working closely with a diction expert to refine his pronunciation and vocal delivery to align with the grand vision of the film. This rigorous process involves spending hours reading and rehearsing lines, and even sending video feedback to the director to perfect the cadence and tone required for such an iconic character.
Building the Body of a Prince-Warrior
The physical transformation from his bulked-up role in 'Animal' to the lean, warrior-like physique of Lord Ram has been dramatic and widely discussed. This change is the result of a dedicated, multi-year training program. His trainers revealed that the regimen moved away from standard weight machines to focus on a more holistic approach. His routine has included weight training, swimming, hiking, jogging, and cycling to build endurance and a defined physique. Reports also suggest Kapoor has adopted a vegetarian diet and quit alcohol to align himself more closely with the sattvic lifestyle associated with the character he is playing. Beyond general fitness, the actor has also undertaken specialised training in skills like archery, a key attribute of Lord Ram.
A Spiritual and Disciplined Approach
The preparation extends far beyond the gym and dialogue sessions. Celebrity trainer Shivohaam revealed that Kapoor's training included specific guidance on posture and how to carry himself, which is essential for embodying the calm and powerful presence of Lord Ram. To truly understand the character's philosophy, Kapoor has reportedly practiced yoga for two years and spent hours in meditation, sometimes guided by a guru. This was complemented by extensive reading and consultations with scholars to deepen his understanding of the epic's texts and teachings. This holistic method, combining physical conditioning with spiritual discipline and deep study, shows an actor fully immersing himself in what many consider a role of a lifetime.
