Indian Railways is elevating the passenger experience with a wave of service and comfort upgrades across its network. From premium amenities to enhanced safety, these changes are redefining train travel. Here is what the new upgrades mean for you.
Tejas Express: The Airline Experience on Rails
Often
hailed as an 'aeroplane on tracks', the Tejas Express continues to set the standard for premium intercity travel. The latest upgrades focus on an even more comfortable and entertaining journey. Passengers can expect aircraft-style amenities like personalised LCD infotainment screens for movies and music, along with on-board Wi-Fi to stay connected. The service has been enhanced with catering served via trolleys by uniformed staff. Automatic sliding doors, CCTV cameras for security, and bio-vacuum toilets for improved hygiene are key features. These trains are designed for speed and comfort, with ergonomic seating and large windows, making them a popular choice for daytime travel between major cities.
Vande Bharat Express: Redefining Speed and Comfort
The Vande Bharat Express has become synonymous with the modernisation of Indian Railways. The latest iterations of these trainsets, including new sleeper versions, have incorporated passenger feedback to improve the travel experience. Key upgrades include seats with an increased recline angle, softer cushions, and more accessible mobile charging points. For enhanced hygiene and convenience, washrooms now feature deeper wash basins to prevent water splashing and sensor-based water taps. Safety remains paramount, with advanced features like the KAVACH anti-collision system, CCTV cameras, and smoke alarms. The new Vande Bharat sleeper trains, set to rival a premium flight experience, feature cushioned berths and individual climate controls, promising a new era of overnight travel.
Rajdhani Express: A Golden-Standard Makeover
As the long-standing premier service connecting the national capital with state capitals, Rajdhani Express trains have been undergoing a significant revamp under 'Project Swarn'. This initiative aims to upgrade the entire passenger experience across ten key areas, including punctuality, cleanliness, catering, and staff behaviour. Passengers on upgraded routes will notice refurbished coach interiors, modular toilets with better fittings, and improved quality linen. The project also focuses on enhancing onboard security with more RPF personnel and providing on-board entertainment options. While Project Swarn was announced some years ago, its phased implementation means more and more Rajdhani rakes are being converted to this 'gold standard', ensuring the legacy train maintains its premium feel.
Amrit Bharat Express: Comfort for the Common Traveller
Aimed at making long-distance travel more affordable and comfortable for passengers in non-AC coaches, the Amrit Bharat Express is a significant new addition. These trains use push-pull technology for smoother acceleration and deceleration, providing a jerk-free journey. The coaches are designed with cushioned luggage racks, foldable snack tables, and mobile charging points. Recent upgrades for the next generation of these trains focus on even more spacious berths and better legroom. Safety features are prominent, including sealed gangways to reduce noise and dust, CCTV surveillance, and an emergency talk-back system. By focusing on the needs of non-AC travellers, the Amrit Bharat Express represents a major upgrade in baseline service quality for millions.
Duronto Express: A Smoother, Quieter Journey
Known for their point-to-point service between major cities, Duronto Express trains are also seeing crucial technical upgrades. Many Duronto rakes are being converted from older ICF coaches to modern Linke Hofmann Busch (LHB) coaches. This is a significant upgrade for passengers as LHB coaches offer superior ride quality, resulting in a smoother and less bumpy journey. They are also much quieter, thanks to better sound insulation. A key benefit of LHB coaches is their enhanced safety design, which prevents coaches from piling on top of each other during a collision. This transition to LHB rakes means Duronto passengers can expect a more comfortable, quieter, and safer long-distance travel experience.
