was the primary currency. However, the rise of generative AI is disrupting this labour-intensive model. AI tools can now write, debug, and optimise code with remarkable efficiency, automating many of the routine tasks that once formed the bedrock of entry-level and mid-tier IT jobs. This automation means the traditional pyramid structure, reliant on a large base of human coders, is becoming less viable. Companies are finding that pure technical execution is no longer the key differentiator; instead, value is shifting towards higher-order tasks that AI cannot yet master.
From Coder to Creative Problem-Solver
As AI handles more of the 'how,' the demand for professionals who can figure out the 'what' and 'why' is surging. The future of IT work in India is becoming more consultative. Instead of just writing code based on specifications, professionals are increasingly expected to understand business problems, design systemic solutions, and guide clients on how to leverage technology strategically. This requires a move from task-based roles to thinking-based roles. The most valuable employees are those who can use AI as a collaborator to solve complex issues, not just as a tool to complete a task. This marks a significant evolution from the traditional role of a software developer to that of a technology strategist and innovator.
The Real Meaning of Adaptability
Adaptability has become a buzzword, but in the context of Indian IT, it has a concrete meaning. It's not just about being open to change; it's a suite of soft skills that machines struggle to replicate. These include creative and analytical thinking, resilience, flexibility, agility, and curiosity. Communication is paramount—translating technical insights from AI into business strategy for clients is a uniquely human skill. Furthermore, adaptability means committing to continuous learning. With technology evolving rapidly, the ability to quickly grasp new tools and concepts is more critical than a static set of technical skills that might become obsolete. Emotional intelligence is another key component, enabling better teamwork, leadership, and client relationships—areas where AI currently falls short.
How Industry Leaders Are Responding
India's top IT firms are not sitting idle. They have initiated massive reskilling and upskilling programs to prepare their workforce for this new reality. Companies like TCS, Infosys, and HCLTech are investing heavily in training employees not just in advanced AI and data science, but also in the softer skills needed for AI-human collaboration. TCS, for example, has reskilled over 300,000 employees on generative AI concepts. This focus on reskilling is also changing hiring practices. The industry is moving away from bulk hiring based on anticipation and towards more strategic, demand-led hiring for specialised roles. This has led to leaner 'benches'—the pool of unassigned employees—which have shrunk from 20-30% in the pre-AI era to single digits or low double-digits today.
Technical Skills Are Evolving, Not Disappearing
The emphasis on soft skills does not mean technical expertise is no longer important. Instead, the nature of technical work is changing. The demand is shifting from manual coding to skills like prompt engineering, AI model management, data science, cloud computing, and cybersecurity. According to NASSCOM, a significant challenge is ensuring that as AI automates routine tasks, junior engineers still gain the deep engineering expertise needed for future innovation. The goal is to create an 'AI-native' workforce that can use AI as a partner to build better systems, rather than an 'AI-reliant' one that simply offloads its work. Success in the future will require professionals who can blend strong technical foundations with the judgment and creativity to apply them in novel ways.
