Not Your 2016 Matte
Forget the thick, full-coverage foundations and drying liquid lipsticks that once defined matte makeup. The new iteration is all about a 'soft-focus' or 'cloud skin' effect. This modern matte is dimensional, breathable, and surprisingly radiant. The goal
isn't to erase all signs of life and light from your face, but to create a velvety, blurred finish that looks like perfected skin, not heavy makeup. Think of it as a real-life filter, offering a smooth, airbrushed appearance that minimizes texture and pores without looking flat or cakey. This look has been gaining traction as a sophisticated alternative to the high-shine, wet-look complexions that have dominated in recent years.
The 'Cloud Skin' Technique
Coined by a global senior artist for M.A.C, the 'cloud skin' trend is about strategically mixing textures to create a multi-dimensional, soft finish. It’s not about masking your skin, but rather perfecting it with a hazy, dream-like quality. The technique often involves applying a hydrating primer and moisturizer before using a lightweight matte or satin-finish foundation. Concealer is used sparingly, just to brighten and even out tone where needed. The key is to avoid a uniform, single-note finish. Instead, some areas are kept matte with a light dusting of powder, while the high points of the face can retain a natural, subtle sheen.
Get the Look: The Base is Everything
Achieving the new matte look starts long before you pick up a foundation bottle. Proper skin prep is crucial to prevent the finish from looking dry or patchy. Start with a hydrating moisturiser or serum to create a plump, smooth canvas. Follow with a blurring primer, especially in areas where pores are more visible. When it comes to foundation, opt for modern, lightweight formulas. Many new matte foundations are infused with hydrating ingredients like hyaluronic acid or shea butter, offering both shine control and moisture. Apply a small amount with a damp sponge or a stippling brush, focusing on the center of the face and blending outwards for a seamless, skin-like finish. The mantra is 'less is more'.
Finishing with Soft Colour
A modern matte face is not devoid of colour. To avoid a flat look, add dimension back with blush and bronzer. Cream-to-powder formulas are excellent for this, as they blend seamlessly into the skin and set to a soft, velvety finish. Apply a matte bronzer to warm up the perimeter of your face and gently sculpt the cheekbones. For blush, choose a soft matte shade and apply it to the apples of the cheeks, blending upwards towards the temples for a natural-looking flush. The idea is to create a healthy haze of colour that appears to emanate from within the skin.
The Modern Matte Lip
The soft-focus effect extends to the lips and eyes. For lips, the trend moves away from sharp, defined lines and towards a softer, 'bitten' look. This can be achieved with a creamy matte lipstick or lip stain. Apply the colour to the center of your lips and use your fingertip to gently blur the colour outwards towards the edges. This creates a diffused, romantic finish that complements the velvety skin. Neutral or dusty rose shades are particularly well-suited to this understated yet polished look. For eyes, simple, neutral matte eyeshadows can be used to softly define the crease, enhancing the eye's natural shape without any harsh lines or shimmer.
