Hunt for Festive Special Trains
To manage the incredible surge in passenger demand during October and November, Indian Railways has announced over 100 special train services. These trains connect major cities like Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, and Bengaluru with destinations in Uttar Pradesh,
Bihar, West Bengal, and southern states. For instance, Northern Railway is running services like the Varanasi-Delhi Special (04209/04210), while Western Railway has extended services on routes like Dadar to Bhusaval. South Central and Eastern Railways have also rolled out numerous specials. Bookings for these trains are open on the IRCTC website and at reservation counters. Since regular trains are likely to have long waiting lists, checking for these special services on the official IRCTC portal or the National Train Enquiry System (NTES) app could be your best bet for securing a confirmed seat.
Verify Cancellations and Diversions
Before you leave for the station, a final check on your train's status is non-negotiable. Due to operational reasons, track maintenance, or non-interlocking work, several trains have been cancelled, diverted, or short-terminated throughout October. For example, significant disruptions are planned until October 4 near Mokama in Bihar, affecting hundreds of trains. Similarly, the Eastern Railway has announced the partial cancellation of 15 Mail/Express trains between Andal and Durgapur until the end of December. Numerous other services under South East Railway and in the Palakkad division are also affected on specific dates. Always use the NTES app or the helpline number 139 (RailMadad) to get real-time updates on your train's schedule to avoid any surprises.
Know the Latest Luggage Limits
Packing for the holidays often means extra bags, but it's crucial to stay within the prescribed luggage limits to avoid hefty fines. The free allowance varies by class: 70 kg for AC First Class, 50 kg for AC 2-Tier, and 40 kg for Sleeper Class and AC 3-Tier. Passengers in AC 3-Tier and AC Chair Car should be especially careful, as the maximum limit is the same as the free allowance (40 kg). For other classes, you can carry excess luggage up to a certain maximum by paying extra charges. Railways has also made it easier to pay for this online through the Indian Railways Parcel Portal for confirmed ticket holders in eligible classes. Also, mind the dimensions: larger bags up to 100cm x 60cm x 25cm are allowed in most classes, but AC 3-Tier and Chair Car have a smaller size restriction of 55cm x 45cm x 22.5cm.
Keep Your Original ID Handy
Indian Railways, particularly the Central Railway zone, has initiated an intensive ticket-checking drive from October 1 to October 31. This drive focuses on verifying the authenticity of tickets, especially those booked under concessional fares or reservation quotas. It is mandatory for at least one passenger on a ticket (including group tickets) to carry a valid, original photo ID. If no one can produce the required original ID during the check, all passengers on that ticket could be treated as travelling without a valid ticket and fined. The minimum penalty for ticketless travel has also been increased from ₹250 to ₹500, in addition to the fare. So, ensure your Aadhaar card, Voter ID, Passport, or other government-issued ID is readily accessible.
Double-Check Your PNR and Booking Status
With the festive rush, many tickets remain on the waiting list (WL). Don't assume a waitlisted ticket will get confirmed. If your ticket remains on the waiting list after the final chart preparation, it is automatically cancelled, and you are not permitted to board the train. You will receive a full refund. However, if your status moves to Reservation Against Cancellation (RAC), you are allotted a seat to share, which is a valid travel authority. For last-minute trips, the Tatkal booking window opens at 10 AM for AC classes and 11 AM for non-AC classes one day in advance of the journey. Be prepared with passenger details saved in your IRCTC 'Master List' for faster booking. An Aadhaar-verified IRCTC account is often required for booking during the initial opening minutes.
