What's New About This Train Service?
In early September 2026, Indian Railways launched a much-anticipated daily express train connecting Mumbai's Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) directly with Sawantwadi Road in South Konkan. This isn't just another train; it's a significant upgrade
for weekend travellers. Before this, connectivity often relied on services from other Mumbai terminals or trains that were not available daily. This new service, the Mumbai-Sawantwadi Express, was specifically introduced to boost tourism by providing a reliable, daily connection to the region's famed attractions. It addresses a long-standing demand for better access to popular Konkan towns, making spontaneous trips and planned vacations much simpler to organise.
The Route and Key Weekend Stops
The train covers a picturesque 510-kilometre stretch along the Konkan coast, starting from CSMT in Mumbai. Key stops after departing the Mumbai Metropolitan Region at Panvel include Roha, Mangaon, Khed, and Chiplun. For the weekend traveller, the most exciting stops lie further south. You can alight at Ratnagiri, the land of Alphonso mangoes and historic forts. Further down, Kankavli station serves as a gateway to the magnificent Sindhudurg sea fort, while Kudal is the stop for those heading to the pristine beaches of Tarkarli for snorkelling and scuba diving. The final destination, Sawantwadi Road, is perfect for exploring the hill station of Amboli and the town's famous wooden toys and lacquerware.
Onboard Comfort and Travel Classes
The new express is equipped with modern and safe LHB (Linke Hofmann Busch) coaches, ensuring a comfortable journey. It offers a range of classes to suit different budgets and preferences, which is ideal for all types of travellers, from families to solo backpackers. The train's composition includes one First Class AC coach for a premium experience, two AC-2 Tier coaches, and three AC-3 Tier coaches for comfortable air-conditioned travel. For those on a tighter budget, it also provides four Sleeper coaches and four General coaches, making the Konkan coast accessible to everyone. This variety allows you to tailor your travel experience, whether you prioritise luxury or value.
For the Scenery Chasers: The Vistadome Option
While the new daily express offers unparalleled convenience, travellers whose primary goal is to soak in the breathtaking scenery of the Konkan Railway have another fantastic option: the Vistadome coaches. These special coaches, attached to trains like the Mumbai-Madgaon Jan Shatabdi Express, feature panoramic glass windows and a glass roof, offering an immersive view of the Western Ghats' verdant valleys, cascading waterfalls, and numerous tunnels. The seats are rotatable, allowing you to face the window for the entire journey. While not a new service, it remains the premium choice for a scenic ride and is worth considering if your travel dates are flexible.
Planning Your Trip: Timings and Bookings
The Mumbai-Sawantwadi Express runs daily, with Train No. 15087 operating from Mumbai to Sawantwadi and Train No. 15088 for the return journey. The inaugural special train left CSMT around midday, arriving at Sawantwadi Road in the early hours of the next morning, taking roughly 13-14 hours. However, Central Railway is expected to announce the final, regular daily timings, which may be optimised for overnight or comfortable daytime travel. Tickets for all classes can be booked through the official IRCTC website and mobile app. Given the popularity of the Konkan route, especially for long weekends and festivals, it is highly advisable to book your tickets several weeks in advance to secure a confirmed seat.
