The ice bath, or cold water immersion (CWI), has long been a celebrated ritual in athletics and wellness. Its appeal is rooted in its powerful physiological effects. Submerging the body in icy water causes blood vessels to constrict, which can help reduce
inflammation, muscle soreness, and swelling after an intense workout. Many proponents also point to the mental benefits; enduring the intense cold is seen as a test of willpower that can increase dopamine, the brain's "feel-good" chemical, and build resilience to stress. For a long time, if you were serious about recovery, a painful, breath-stealing plunge was seen as the gold standard. How to Try a Contrast Shower
Curious to try it? The process is simple. Start with your normal warm shower for 3-5 minutes. Then, turn the water to as cold as you can tolerate for about 30-60 seconds. Switch back to hot water for another 3 minutes, then back to cold for 30-60 seconds. Repeat this cycle three to five times, always making sure to end on a cold note to help stimulate your system and close the pores.
