The Double Threat to Your Skin
Delhi's hazy season launches a two-pronged assault on your skin. First, the dry air pulls moisture directly from the skin's surface, a process that can lead to flaking, cracking, and itchiness. This is especially challenging for those with pre-existing
conditions like eczema or psoriasis, which often flare up in cold, dry climates. Second, the air is thick with pollutants like particulate matter (PM2.5), which are tiny particles that can penetrate the skin's outer layers. These pollutants generate free radicals, unstable molecules that cause oxidative stress, leading to inflammation, collagen breakdown, and accelerated ageing. In short, the haze doesn't just sit on your skin; it gets into it, weakening its natural defences.
Understanding Your Skin's Barrier
Think of your skin's outermost layer as a protective brick wall. This 'skin barrier' is designed to keep moisture in and harmful elements out. However, low humidity and pollution work together to dismantle this wall. Dry air dehydrates the 'bricks', causing them to shrink and crack, while pollutants actively weaken the 'mortar' that holds everything together. When this barrier is compromised, your skin loses its ability to hold onto water, resulting in persistent dryness and sensitivity. It also becomes more vulnerable to allergens and irritants, which can now easily penetrate the deeper layers, causing redness, inflammation, and breakouts.
Moisturiser: Your Daily Defence
This is where moisturising becomes more than just a cosmetic step; it's a crucial act of defence. A good moisturiser does two critical things. Firstly, it replenishes lost hydration. Secondly, and more importantly, it helps repair and reinforce your skin's compromised barrier. By creating a protective seal on the surface, it prevents further moisture from evaporating into the dry air and acts as a shield against environmental pollutants. Think of it as applying a fresh layer of sealant to that weathered brick wall, locking in the good stuff and keeping the bad stuff out. This simple step is fundamental to preventing the itch-scratch cycle that can damage skin further.
How to Choose the Right Moisturiser
Not all moisturisers are created equal, especially when battling Delhi's climate. For this season, opt for thicker creams that often come in a jar rather than a thin lotion from a pump bottle. Look for products with a combination of three key ingredient types: humectants, emollients, and occlusives. Humectants like hyaluronic acid and glycerin pull moisture into the skin. Emollients soften the skin's surface. And occlusives, such as petrolatum or squalane, form a physical barrier to lock that moisture in. Ingredients like ceramides are particularly valuable as they are a natural component of the skin barrier and help to actively repair it. Also, ensure your face moisturiser is 'non-comedogenic', meaning it won't clog pores.
Beyond the Bottle: A Holistic Approach
While the right moisturiser is your hero product, a few other habits can provide support. Start by switching to a gentle, creamy, and fragrance-free cleanser that won't strip your skin of its natural oils. Always apply your moisturiser to damp skin, such as right after a shower, to trap in as much water as possible. Consider using an antioxidant serum containing Vitamin C in the morning; it can help neutralise the free radicals from pollution before they cause damage. At home, using a humidifier can add much-needed moisture back into your immediate environment, giving your skin a break from the dry air. And of course, remember to hydrate from within by drinking plenty of water throughout the day.
