A Landscape Forged by Nature
Much of Kerala's coastline is famously flat, a gentle transition of sand and palms meeting the water. Varkala is the exception. Here, the coast rises dramatically to form stunning red laterite cliffs that run parallel to the sea. This unique geological
formation, a protected national monument, is the very foundation of its charm. The main promenade, a paved walkway along what is known as the North Cliff, isn't just a path; it's a balcony overlooking the ocean. This elevated perspective transforms a simple meal into a cinematic event, with panoramic views of the waves crashing below and surfers gliding across the water.
A Global Menu with a Local Soul
The cliff is a culinary runway, lined with dozens of cafes and restaurants that cater to a global palate. As evening approaches, restaurant staff meticulously arrange their 'catch of the day' on ice-laden tables out front—a fresh spectacle of prawns, calamari, and snapper. You can pick your seafood and have it prepared to your liking, often grilled with simple but flavourful Keralan spices. Beyond the exceptional seafood, the menus are a delightful mix. You’ll find authentic South Indian dishes, North Indian curries, and a surprising variety of international options, including Italian and Tibetan food. This fusion is a direct reflection of Varkala's identity as a backpacker's haven and a yogi's retreat, creating a diverse food scene that satisfies any craving.
The Atmosphere from Dawn to Dusk
The experience on the cliff changes with the light. Mornings are serene, with a handful of early risers sipping Vietnamese coffee or enjoying a healthy smoothie bowl after a yoga session. The afternoons are for lazy lunches in the shade, with the sea breeze providing natural air conditioning. But it's at sunset that the promenade truly comes alive. The cliffside cafes and restaurants, with names like Cafe del Mar, Trip is Life, and Abba Restaurant, become front-row seats to a spectacular natural show. As the sun dips below the horizon, painting the sky in hues of orange and pink, the glow of fairy lights and candles creates a magical, bohemian atmosphere that is both lively and incredibly relaxed.
Choosing Your Cliff Experience
Varkala is broadly divided into the North Cliff and the South Cliff. The North Cliff is the main hub of activity—it's more commercial, crowded, and where you'll find the highest concentration of shops, guesthouses, and restaurants. It’s perfect for those who want to be in the heart of the action. The South Cliff, by contrast, is quieter and more spread out, offering a more tranquil experience with some highly-rated cafes that boast equally stunning, if less bustling, views. Many regulars recommend staying on the quieter South Cliff and taking the short, scenic walk to the North Cliff for its wider variety of dining options.
