Start With Your Statements
Your first port of call is your bank and credit card statements. Many banks now encourage paperless statements, which you can access instantly through your online portal or mobile app. Set aside time to review the last three months of transactions. Look
for recurring charges, especially smaller amounts that you might usually overlook. Pay close attention to names you don't recognise or services you thought you had cancelled. Creating a simple list of these recurring payments will form the foundation of your audit. This manual review is crucial because it gives you a complete picture of where your money is actually going, helping you spot everything from bank errors to forgotten free trials that silently converted to paid plans.
Audit Your Smartphone's Subscriptions
Many subscriptions are tied directly to your phone's app store. For iPhone users, open the 'Settings' app, tap your name at the top, and then select 'Subscriptions'. This screen will show a list of all active and inactive subscriptions linked to your Apple ID. For Android users, the process is similar: open the Google Play Store, tap your profile picture in the top-right corner, and navigate to 'Payments & subscriptions', then 'Subscriptions'. Both platforms make it easy to see the renewal date and cost, and provide a button to cancel services you no longer need. In most cases, cancelling will still allow you to use the service until the end of the current billing period.
Hunt Down UPI AutoPay Mandates
In India, the Unified Payments Interface (UPI) AutoPay feature has made setting up recurring payments incredibly convenient, but also easy to forget. Major apps like PhonePe, Google Pay, and Paytm all have sections where you can view and manage your active mandates. To find them, open your preferred UPI app and look for a menu option like 'AutoPay', 'Mandates', or 'Subscription Management'. This will display a list of all the recurring payments you have authorised, from streaming services to SIPs. You can view details, see past payments, and pause or cancel the mandate directly from the app, giving you full control over these automated debits. Given that UPI AutoPay now processes thousands of crores in mandates monthly, manually checking this is no longer optional.
Review Your Email for Digital Receipts
Not all subscriptions are managed through an app store. Many services, especially software or international platforms, are signed up for directly on a website. The best way to find these is by searching your email inbox. Look for keywords like 'subscription', 'renewal', 'receipt', 'your order', or 'welcome to'. These terms will help you uncover digital paper trails for services you may have forgotten about. Check your spam and trash folders as well, as renewal notices can sometimes end up there. This method is particularly effective for finding annual subscriptions that you are only billed for once a year, making them the easiest to forget.
Consider a Subscription Manager App
If a manual search feels overwhelming, technology can help. A growing category of subscription manager apps can automatically track your recurring payments. Some apps, like Rocket Money, connect to your bank accounts to automatically detect recurring charges. Others, which prioritise privacy, require you to add your subscriptions manually but offer powerful features like renewal reminders and spending analysis by category. Apps like TrackAutoPay and UPI Tracker are built specifically for the Indian market, understanding the nuances of UPI mandates and various local payment methods. While some apps are free, many offer premium features for a fee, so choose one that best fits your needs and budget.
The Art of Cancellation
Once you've identified the subscriptions you want to cut, it's time to act. For App Store and Google Play subscriptions, cancellation is usually a one-tap process. For UPI mandates, you can cancel directly within your payment app. For services billed directly, you will likely need to log in to the service's website and navigate to your account or billing settings. Some companies make this intentionally difficult. Be persistent. If you cannot find a clear cancellation button, look for a customer support email or help section. Document your cancellation request with a date and screenshot in case you need to dispute a future charge. Remember, the goal is to only pay for services that you actively use and value.
