As India gears up for the festive season, the economic buzz is translating into a significant employment wave. A notable 7% year-on-year growth in festive hiring is creating over 1.27 lakh jobs, signalling a robust consumer market.
Decoding the 7% Surge
This year's festive
job market has seen a 7% increase, resulting in approximately 1,27,080 new positions. This steady expansion continues a trend from previous years, which saw 98,120 jobs in 2024 and 1,18,750 in 2025. This growth is particularly noteworthy as it contrasts with a general moderation in the overall white-collar job market, highlighting the concentrated power of India's consumption and fulfilment economy during the festive period. The hiring spree is a direct response to anticipated spikes in consumer demand during Navratri, Dussehra, Diwali, and the broader year-end shopping season.
Quick Commerce and E-commerce Dominate
The primary engine behind this job boom is the digital marketplace. Quick commerce has emerged as the fastest-growing sector, with an 18% year-on-year increase in festive hiring. It is closely followed by the broader e-commerce sector, which saw a 12% rise, and logistics and transportation, which grew by 10%. Major players are scaling up operations significantly. Flipkart announced over 2.5 lakh direct and indirect roles, while Amazon is adding more than 1.6 lakh seasonal opportunities. Myntra is doubling its seasonal workforce with over 26,000 positions, and Meesho anticipates enabling over 10 lakh opportunities through its vast seller and logistics network.
The Most In-Demand Roles
The demand is overwhelmingly for frontline workers who keep the supply chain moving. Roles for delivery and last-mile executives are in a statistical tie with warehouse associates (including pickers and packers) as the most sought-after positions, with both categories accounting for 29% of expected demand. Other critical roles include production and assembly line workers (27%), drivers and transport staff (24%), and fulfilment and inventory operators (23%). Beyond these core logistics jobs, companies are also hiring for customer service, retail sales, and field operations. A new category of 'new-age operational roles' is also growing, including dark-store inventory controllers, returns specialists, and marketplace operations professionals.
Hiring Moves Beyond Metros
While major metro cities like Delhi_NCR, Mumbai, and Bengaluru still account for the largest share of jobs (56%), the fastest growth is happening elsewhere. Tier_II cities such as Jaipur, Lucknow, and Coimbatore now represent 27% of festive jobs and have seen an 11% growth in hiring. Even more impressively, Tier_III and other emerging cities recorded the fastest growth at 15%. This geographic diversification shows that the expansion of e_commerce, retail, and logistics networks is creating employment opportunities well beyond traditional urban centres, with nearly 45% of total demand expected from these smaller cities.
Workforce Demographics and Pay
The festive workforce is getting younger, with early-'career professionals (0-'3 years of experience) accounting for 43% of these new roles. In total, 70% of the jobs go to talent with up to six years of experience. This demand for an agile, digitally-'ready workforce comes with a pay bump. Temporary workers in metro areas can expect a wage increase of $12$-$15%, while those in Tier-'II and Tier-'III cities may see an $8$-$10%$ rise. E-'commerce and logistics roles are leading in pay, with an average monthly salary of around ₹$24$,$266$. This seasonal work is also becoming a potential gateway to more stable employment, with reports indicating that nearly three-'quarters of employers intend to retain at least $10%$ of their festive hires for longer-'term roles.
