changes this dynamic completely. The cool water on your skin and lower ambient temperatures can trick your senses. You might not feel as hot or as sweaty, leading to a blunted thirst response. Studies have shown that thirst is diminished by up to 40% in colder conditions. This creates a disconnect between how much fluid you are actually losing and how much you think you need to drink. This is particularly relevant in India, where monsoon weather is often humid but not necessarily cold, creating a perfect storm for unnoticed dehydration.

The real culprit during a rainy workout is humidity. Humidity refers to the amount of water vapour in the air. When the air is already saturated with moisture—as it is during and after rain—your sweat cannot evaporate efficiently. Instead of vanishing and cooling you down, sweat drips off your body or clings to your skin without providing its main cooling benefit. As a result, your body has to work harder to regulate its core temperature. Your heart rate increases as your system tries to pump more blood to the skin to release heat. This extra strain makes the workout feel more difficult and accelerates fluid loss, even if you don't feel drenched in your own sweat. You are sweating, but the rain and humid air are masking the evidence.
The Sneaky Risks of Dehydration
Losing even 2% of your body weight in fluids can significantly impair your athletic performance and cognitive function. The signs of dehydration can be subtle at first, often mistaken for simple fatigue from the workout itself. Early symptoms include a dry mouth, lethargy, headache, and muscle weakness or cramping. As it progresses, you might experience dizziness, confusion, and an increased heart rate and breathing. In cool or rainy weather, these symptoms can be easy to dismiss. You might attribute a headache to exertion or fatigue to a tough run, not realising that your body is crying out for fluids. This can not only ruin your workout but also pose a genuine health risk.
The Simple Way to Track Your Sweat Loss
Since thirst isn't a reliable guide in rainy weather, a more objective measure is needed. The most effective way to understand your personal fluid loss is by calculating your sweat rate. The method is simple: weigh yourself without clothes immediately before your workout. Go for your run or perform your exercise, keeping track of any fluids you consume. Afterwards, towel dry and weigh yourself again, also without clothes. For every kilogram of weight lost, you have lost approximately one litre of fluid. For instance, if you lost 0.5 kg during a one-hour run and drank 250 ml of water, your total fluid loss is 750 ml. This number gives you a personalised target for rehydration.
Smarter Hydration for Rainy Days
Knowing your sweat rate allows you to create a smart hydration plan. Start your workout well-hydrated by drinking water in the hours leading up to it. During your exercise, especially if it lasts longer than an hour, don't wait until you feel thirsty. Sip water or an electrolyte drink regularly. Electrolytes, particularly sodium and potassium, are lost through sweat and are crucial for muscle function and fluid balance. Post-workout rehydration is just as important. The goal is to replace more fluid than you lost. A good rule of thumb is to drink 1.25 to 1.5 litres of fluid for every kilogram of body weight lost. This ensures you replenish what you've sweated out and account for ongoing fluid loss through urine.
