particularly in physical therapy and geriatrics, to assess functional fitness. It’s a reliable way to measure lower-body strength, balance, and endurance—all crucial components for maintaining mobility and independence as we age. The test's beauty lies in its simplicity. It mimics one of the most fundamental movements we perform daily: getting up from a seated position. Its growing popularity highlights a shift towards valuing practical, functional strength over purely aesthetic fitness goals.
How to Perform the Test Correctly
To get an accurate measure, proper form is key. All you need is a sturdy, straight-backed chair without armrests (a standard dining chair works well) and a timer. The seat should be about 17 inches from the floor. Place the chair against a wall to ensure it doesn’t slide.
1. Sit in the middle of the chair with your back straight.
2. Place your feet flat on the floor, about shoulder-width apart.
3. Cross your arms over your chest, with your hands on your opposite shoulders.
4. On the word “Go,” start your 30-second timer and rise to a full standing position.
5. Immediately sit back down with control.
Repeat this for the full 30 seconds, counting how many complete stands you can perform. If you are more than halfway up when the timer stops, you can count it as a full repetition. Using your arms to push off your legs or the chair means the repetition doesn't count. If you can't stand without using your arms at all, your score is zero.

The number of completed stands is your score, and it serves as a valuable personal benchmark. While you shouldn't obsess over the number, it's helpful to have context. According to data from the Senior Fitness Test and the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), average scores vary by age and gender. For example, for people aged 60-64, a score below 14 for men and 12 for women is considered below average and may indicate a higher risk of falls. For those aged 70-74, below-average scores are less than 12 for men and 10 for women. It's important to view this not as a pass-fail exam, but as a snapshot of your current functional strength. The goal is to establish a baseline you can work to improve over time.

- Glute Bridges: Lie on your back with your knees bent and feet flat on the floor. Lift your hips toward the ceiling, squeeze your glutes, and then lower back down. This strengthens your glutes and hamstrings.
- Lunges: Step forward with one leg and lower your hips until both knees are bent at a 90-degree angle. Push back to the starting position. Lunges improve single-leg strength and stability.
- Calf Raises: Stand tall and push through the balls of your feet to raise your heels off the ground. This simple move strengthens the calf muscles, which are important for walking and balance.
