Moraine Lake and the Valley of the Ten Peaks
No trip to the Canadian Rockies is complete without seeing Moraine Lake. The view from the top of the Rockpile Trail is one of the most photographed scenes in Canada, and for good reason. A short and easy climb leads you to a panoramic vista of the impossibly
blue, glacier-fed lake, framed by ten jagged mountain peaks. While this viewpoint is a must-do, don't stop there. The Lakeshore Trail offers a flat and gentle walk along the water's edge, providing different perspectives of the valley's grandeur. For those seeking a more challenging adventure, the Larch Valley trail is a moderate hike that climbs through a beautiful forest, opening up into an alpine meadow with stunning views of the surrounding peaks. It’s an iconic area that truly captures the raw beauty of Banff National Park.
The Lake Louise Teahouse Challenge
Lake Louise is another jewel of Banff, offering several classic hikes that combine stunning scenery with a unique cultural experience. The area is famous for its two historic teahouses, accessible only by foot. The Lake Agnes Teahouse hike is a moderate 7.7-kilometre round trip that takes you up into a charming hanging valley. Along the way, you’ll pass the serene Mirror Lake before arriving at Lake Agnes, where a rustic teahouse has been serving hikers since 1905. From here, ambitious hikers can continue to the Plain of Six Glaciers. This longer trail follows the shore of Lake Louise before climbing into a dramatic, rocky plain surrounded by glaciers like Mount Victoria and Mount Lefroy. The reward is another charming teahouse and the thunderous sound of distant avalanches.
Jasper's Maligne Lake and Canyon
Moving north along the spectacular Icefields Parkway, Jasper National Park offers its own brand of rugged wilderness. Maligne Lake, the largest natural lake in the Canadian Rockies, is the centrepiece. The area provides a variety of trails for all abilities. The Mary Schäffer Loop is an easy walk perfect for families, offering beautiful views along the forested shoreline. For more panoramic vistas, the Bald Hills trail provides a moderate climb to a viewpoint overlooking the entire length of the lake and its surrounding peaks. Nearby, Maligne Canyon offers a completely different experience. A series of bridges crisscrosses a deep, narrow gorge carved by the Maligne River. The trail follows the canyon rim, allowing you to peer down at the powerful waterfalls and swirling pools below, showcasing the sheer force of nature.
Wilcox Pass: A View of the Giants
Situated just south of the Columbia Icefield Centre in Jasper National Park, Wilcox Pass is often hailed as one of the best day hikes for its incredible scenic rewards. The trail is a moderate climb that quickly ascends above the treeline into a vast alpine meadow. From here, you are treated to an unparalleled, jaw-dropping panorama of the Athabasca Glacier and the surrounding icefields. This is the largest icefield in the Rocky Mountains, and the scale is difficult to comprehend. The pass is also prime habitat for bighorn sheep, which are often seen grazing peacefully in the meadows, seemingly unfazed by hikers. Unlike other trails where the main viewpoint is the final destination, Wilcox Pass offers continuous, spectacular views as you wander through its wide-open landscape, making every step memorable.
