An Aesthetic You Can Taste
The first thing you notice upon entering one of Hyderabad's new Korean-style cafes is the deliberate sense of calm. These spaces are designed with a keen eye for visuals, often featuring minimalist interiors, pastel colour palettes, and thoughtful decor
that feels both modern and comforting. Unlike the busy, functional nature of a traditional coffee shop, these cafes serve as a 'third space'—a serene environment for socializing, working, or simply relaxing. The aesthetic is not just a backdrop; it's a core part of the experience, built to be as Instagrammable as it is inviting. This focus on design and ambiance offers a quiet, contemplative alternative, which has struck a chord with a younger generation seeking experiences over simple transactions.
More Than Just Coffee
The menu in a Korean concept cafe is a departure from the familiar cappuccinos and croissants. Here, the offerings are an adventure in themselves. You are more likely to find savory snacks like Tteokbokki (spicy rice cakes) and Kimbap (seaweed rice rolls) than a paneer puff. For those with a sweet tooth, the star is often Bingsu, a mountain of shaved ice topped with fruits and condensed milk, or the trendy Croffle, a delightful hybrid of a croissant and a waffle. Even the drinks are different, with fruit-infused teas, boba, and unique lattes taking centre stage. This culinary diversity is key to their appeal, introducing Hyderabadis to flavours made popular by Korean media and offering a new snacking culture.
The Power of the Hallyu Wave
This trend didn't emerge from a vacuum. It's deeply connected to the global phenomenon of Hallyu, or the Korean Wave. As K-dramas and K-pop music have surged in popularity in India, so has the desire to experience the culture firsthand. Fans see their favourite characters meeting in chic Seoul cafes, sharing bowls of ramen, or grabbing a Korean corn dog, and they want to replicate that experience. Hyderabad has seen a significant rise in the popularity of all things Korean, from language classes to K-pop dance workshops, making the city a fertile ground for these cultural hubs to flourish. Food delivery platforms have noted this shift, with one reporting a 50% year-on-year increase in Korean food orders, driven largely by Gen Z.
Hyderabad's K-Culture Hotspots
Several establishments are leading this charge in Hyderabad. Goguryeo in Madhapur, run by Korean nationals, offers an authentic experience with walls adorned with posters of K-pop stars like BTS and Blackpink, creating an immersive atmosphere for fans. It has even introduced Hyderabad's first Korean karaoke dining experience, blending food with entertainment. Other popular spots include Seoul In Town (Authentic Korean Cuisine) and pan-Asian restaurants like Chubby Cho and Hibacci, which have robust Korean sections on their menus. The trend has gone mainstream, with larger chains like SOCIAL hosting month-long 'Kore-yeah' festivals in collaboration with the Embassy of the Republic of Korea, featuring special menus, workshops, and K-pop nights, confirming that Korean food culture is here to stay.
