When you think of autumn, images of fiery red and gold leaves likely come to mind. But in Meghalaya, the season is painted in an entirely different hue: pink. Every November, the hills of Shillong burst into a spectacle of cherry blossoms.
An Unexpected Autumn Spectacle
While Japan's
famous sakura bloom in spring, Meghalaya is home to the world's only autumn cherry blossom festival. The star of the show is the Wild Himalayan Cherry, or Prunus cerasoides, a species native to the Himalayas that flowers in late October and November. As the rest of the country's trees shed their leaves, the Khasi Hills around Shillong come alive with delicate pink and white flowers, transforming the landscape into a dreamlike canvas. The cool, crisp post-monsoon weather, with temperatures ranging from 12°C to 20°C, provides the perfect climate for these blossoms to thrive and for travellers to explore comfortably.
The Heart of the Bloom: Shillong
Shillong, the state's capital, is the epicentre of this floral phenomenon. To best experience the bloom, head to Ward's Lake, a colonial-era waterbody where blossom-lined paths reflect in the tranquil water, creating picture-perfect moments. Other key viewing spots include the sprawling Shillong Golf Course, the area around the Polo Grounds, and the roads leading towards Upper Shillong. The blossoms are not confined to parks; they grow wild, lining streets and dotting the city, ensuring that the pink-hued magic is present around almost every corner. An early morning walk is ideal for enjoying the serene beauty and soft light before the daily crowds arrive.
More Than Flowers: A Vibrant Festival
To celebrate this natural wonder, Meghalaya hosts the annual Shillong Cherry Blossom Festival. What began in 2016 as a modest government initiative has blossomed into a major international event, attracting tens of thousands of visitors. For 2026, the festival is scheduled for November 20-21. While the flowers can be enjoyed freely across the city, the ticketed festival is a hub of activity, featuring performances by international and local music artists, food stalls offering regional delicacies, art installations, and cultural showcases. In recent years, headliners have included major international acts, turning the event into one of India's most anticipated music festivals.
Planning Your Pink-Tinged Getaway
November is peak season in Meghalaya, so it's wise to book flights and accommodation well in advance. The most convenient way to reach Shillong is by flying to Guwahati, Assam, which is about a threendrive away. You can also fly directly to Shillong's airport, which has more limited connections. For your stay, consider hotels near areas like Police Bazar or Laitumkhrah for easy access to blossom spots and city amenities. Pack light woollens, as days are pleasant but evenings and mornings can be quite chilly. While the festival itself is a major draw, remember that the cherry blossom season often begins in late October and can last through mid-November, so you can plan your trip around the festival dates to enjoy the flowers with fewer crowds.
The cherry blossoms are a perfect reason to visit, but they can also be the gateway to exploring Meghalaya's other wonders. November's clear skies and dry weather make it an ideal time for adventure. You can take a day trip to Cherrapunji (Sohra) to see its waterfalls, which are still flowing post-monsoon. Venture to Dawki to witness the famed crystal-clear waters of the Umngot River, an experience at its best from November to April. Other mustsee attractions include Mawlynnong, often called 'Asia's Cleanest Village', the aweinspiring living root bridges, and the ancient Mawsmai Caves. Combining the floral beauty of Shillong with these natural marvels makes for an unforgettable Northeast Indian journey.
