Another Train on a High-Demand Route
Indian Railways has officially approved a third Vande Bharat train for the Jammu Tawi-Srinagar corridor, responding to consistently high passenger demand. The two existing Vande Bharat services on this route have been operating at full capacity since
they were extended to connect Jammu Tawi directly with Srinagar on April 30, 2026. The introduction of a third train is intended to increase passenger capacity and offer more travel options on this crucial link between the Jammu region and the Kashmir Valley. The new service will be designated as Train No. 26407/26408.
Route and Key Stoppages
The new Vande Bharat Express will run between Jammu Tawi and Srinagar, covering a distance of approximately 269 kilometres. Like the existing services, it will traverse the Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL), a landmark project featuring remarkable engineering feats like the Chenab Rail Bridge, the world's highest railway bridge. The planned stoppages for the Vande Bharat trains on this corridor include Martyr Captain Tushar Mahajan Udhampur, Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra, Reasi, and Banihal. These stops are strategically placed to serve locals, tourists, and pilgrims visiting the Vaishno Devi shrine.
Schedule and Travel Time
While the exact schedule for the third Vande Bharat has not yet been released, the existing services complete the journey between Jammu Tawi and Srinagar in about 4 hours and 45 minutes. This is a significant time-saving compared to road travel. The current trains operate six days a week, and it is expected the new service will follow a similar pattern to ensure regular connectivity. Recently, the maximum permissible speed on the Katra-Banihal section was increased to 100 kmph, a move expected to further reduce travel times and enhance operational efficiency.
Onboard Experience and Special Features
The Vande Bharat trains designed for Kashmir are specially adapted for the region's cold weather conditions, ensuring year-round operation. Passengers can expect modern amenities including airline-style reclining seats, large observation windows for scenic views, onboard Wi-Fi for connectivity, and GPS-based passenger information systems. The coaches are equipped with advanced heating systems and insulated components to provide comfort during harsh winters. The trains offer two classes of travel: AC Chair Car (CC) and Executive Chair Car (EC), both providing a premium travel experience.
Fares and Booking Information
Ticket prices for the new service are expected to be in line with the existing Vande Bharat trains on the route. For the current services, fares for the AC Chair Car generally range from approximately ₹660 to ₹880, while Executive Chair Car tickets cost between ₹1,270 and ₹1,515, depending on the specific train and service direction. Passengers will be able to book tickets for the new train through the official IRCTC website and mobile app once the service is formally launched and bookings are opened to the public. Given the high demand, booking in advance is highly recommended.
