Why Special Trains Are Essential
October and November are peak travel months in India, driven by major festivals like Durga Puja, Diwali, and Chhath Puja. Millions of people travel from metropolitan hubs like Mumbai to their hometowns to celebrate with family. This creates an enormous
demand for train tickets, far exceeding the capacity of regularly scheduled services. To ease this burden and ensure smoother travel, railway zones like Central Railway and Western Railway introduce hundreds of special train trips on high-density routes. These services provide much-needed additional berths and help manage the passenger flow during this busy period.
Central Railway's Extensive Festival Network
Central Railway (CR) has announced a significant number of services to handle the festive demand. It plans to run 418 special train services connecting Mumbai with numerous destinations. These trains will depart from major city terminals including Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) and Lokmanya Tilak Terminus (LTT). Key routes include daily services to Gorakhpur, weekly AC specials to Chennai and Bengaluru, and bi-weekly trains to Latur. Additional services will also connect Mumbai to Nagpur and Kolhapur, ensuring wide coverage across central, north, and south India. For example, the daily special to Gorakhpur (01079) will run from October 16 to November 16, while the weekly AC service to Bengaluru (01013) is scheduled from October 10 to November 21.
Connecting Mumbai to the South and West
To enhance connectivity towards the southern states, special weekly trains will operate between Mumbai's LTT and Thiruvananthapuram North in Kerala. The service (01463) will run every Thursday from October 15 to November 19, traversing the Konkan route. This train will provide crucial links to destinations in Goa, Karnataka, and Kerala. Another weekly special will connect LTT with Madgaon in Goa on Fridays between October 9 and November 20. For passengers travelling within Maharashtra, Western Railway has extended the trips of the Dadar-Bhusaval weekly special train until November 27, 2026, providing further options for regional travel.
