The Rise of Subscription Creep
In the digital age, we subscribe to everything: streaming services, music apps, news portals, fitness trackers, and cloud storage. Individually, these small monthly payments of ₹149 or ₹299 seem harmless. However, they accumulate into what is known as
“subscription creep.” This is the gradual and often unnoticed increase in recurring expenses. A free trial for a new video platform converts to a paid plan, a fitness app renews long after your motivation has faded, and you might even be paying for multiple services that do the same thing. Before you know it, these tiny leaks can drain a significant amount from your income each year, often without you realising it. The convenience of automated payments becomes a double-edged sword, making it easier than ever to lose track of where your money is going.
Why UPI AutoPay Makes It Easy to Forget
The Unified Payments Interface (UPI) has revolutionised payments in India, and its AutoPay feature makes managing recurring bills incredibly simple. You authorise a mandate once with your UPI PIN, and the payments happen automatically. But this seamlessness is also its primary pitfall. Unlike manual payments that force you to confront the expense each month, AutoPay operates silently in the background. A lack of notifications for every low-value debit can create a blind spot in your personal finance management. It’s common for users to forget which app they even used to set up a mandate, leading to confusion and a growing list of active, but unused, subscriptions. This is why a regular, deliberate audit is not just a good idea, but a financial necessity.
How to Conduct Your UPI Auto Pay Audit
Finding all your active mandates is easier than you think. While you can check individual UPI apps like Google Pay, PhonePe, or Paytm under sections often labelled 'AutoPay', 'Mandates', or 'Automatic Payments', there is a more effective central solution. The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) provides a dedicated portal (upihelp.npci.org.in) where you can see all your mandates in one place. Simply log in with your UPI-registered mobile number and OTP, navigate to 'My Mandates,' and you will see a complete list of every recurring payment you have authorised. Review each entry carefully. For any service you no longer use or recognise, you can instantly cancel the mandate by clicking 'Revoke' and confirming with your UPI PIN.
Common Subscriptions You Might Have Forgotten
As you go through your audit, keep an eye out for these commonly forgotten subscriptions. Streaming services for OTT platforms like Zee5 or SonyLIV that you subscribed to for a single movie or series are major culprits. Annual subscriptions, such as for Amazon Prime or antivirus software, are also easy to miss since they are only charged once a year. Other frequent offenders include music streaming apps you trialled but never adopted, gym memberships from abandoned fitness goals, unused cloud storage upgrades, and learning platforms for courses you lost interest in. Even smaller charges for premium features on mobile apps or food delivery platforms can add up significantly over time.
Beyond Savings: Regaining Financial Control
The most immediate benefit of an AutoPay audit is, of course, saving money. Cancelling just two or three unused services can easily put a few thousand rupees back into your pocket annually. But the advantages go deeper than that. Conducting a subscription audit is an act of financial mindfulness. It gives you a crystal-clear picture of your digital consumption habits and empowers you to make conscious decisions about where your money goes. This process helps you transition from a passive spender to an active manager of your finances. It reduces budget surprises, prevents potential low-balance charges from your bank, and builds a healthy habit of regularly reviewing your financial health.
