The Greening Paradox Explained
On the surface, the news sounds like an environmental victory. A recent study led by the Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology (IITM) in Pune projects that India's vegetation will grow substantially through 2100. This isn't just a minor increase; under
a high-emission scenario, the rate at which plants absorb carbon dioxide is projected to nearly double. The primary drivers are rising atmospheric carbon dioxide, which acts like a fertilizer for plants (a phenomenon called CO2 fertilization), and an increase in projected rainfall. Regions like the Indo-Gangetic Plain, Northeast India, and the Western Ghats are expected to see the most significant gains in greenery. This trend could enhance India's capacity to act as a carbon sink, absorbing more greenhouse gases from the atmosphere. But scientists are quick to caution that this greener facade doesn't automatically equal a healthier planet.
More Green Can Mean Less Water
One of the most immediate and concerning risks is the strain on water resources. While some models predict more rainfall, more plants also means more water consumption. A significant portion of India's greening, particularly in past decades, has been linked not to healthy forests but to the expansion of irrigated agriculture. This form of greening has been supported by intensive groundwater extraction, especially in the crucial agricultural belts of the Ganges-Brahmaputra and Indus basins. This has already led to dramatic drops in groundwater tables in states like Punjab and Haryana. The fear is that a future dominated by more vegetation—whether crops or other plants—without a corresponding, sustainable water management plan could exacerbate an already critical water crisis, turning a green landscape into a trigger for severe water scarcity. The lesson is stark: greening that undermines water security is ultimately unsustainable.
A Threat to Biodiversity and Ecosystem Health
A greener map doesn't necessarily depict a more diverse or resilient ecosystem. The CO2 fertilization effect might favour certain fast-growing species over others, potentially leading to a less diverse landscape. More alarmingly, these changing conditions can create a perfect storm for invasive alien plants. A separate study published in 'Nature Sustainability' warns that invasive species are already spreading across India at unprecedented rates, covering nearly 15,500 square kilometres of natural area each year. These invaders can outcompete native flora, reduce fodder for wildlife, and degrade ecosystems. For example, the spread of species like Lantana camara and Prosopis juliflora has already caused significant damage to forests and drylands. So, while the overall landmass may appear greener, the underlying health of the ecosystem could be declining as native biodiversity is lost.
Not All Green Is Created Equal
It is crucial to distinguish between different types of greening. Greening from forest restoration with diverse, native species can improve biodiversity and regulate water cycles. However, greening from irrigated monoculture crops or fast-growing, water-hungry plantations can create what some call a 'green mirage'. Studies from IIT Kharagpur highlight that while India's green cover might be increasing structurally, its functional health is declining. They found that the ability of forests to efficiently convert sunlight and carbon into biomass—their photosynthetic efficiency—has actually decreased in many regions due to heat and moisture stress. This means that even as forests look greener, their ability to function as a healthy carbon sink is weakening. Rising temperatures and extreme weather events can suppress plant growth and harm ecosystems, even if overall vegetation cover is increasing.
A Call for Smarter, Sustainable Greening
The scientific consensus is not that greening is bad, but that it must be managed with foresight and a deep understanding of ecological principles. This paradox presents a major challenge for policymakers. Simply aiming for higher green cover numbers is not enough. Future strategies need to move beyond mere tree-planting targets and focus on ecological restoration. This involves prioritizing native species, carefully assessing the impact on local water resources, and managing the growing threat of invasive plants. Strengthening urban planning to integrate green spaces and protecting biodiversity hotspots like the Western Ghats from negative shifts are also critical. The goal is to ensure that India's path to a greener future strengthens its rivers, groundwater, forests, and communities, rather than putting them at further risk.
