The festive season is here, and you've managed to snag a last-minute ticket. The relief! But then comes the worry: a tight connection. Here’s how to ensure your multi-leg journey is smooth, even when booked in a hurry.
Understand Your Itinerary First
Before anything else, understand
the structure of your booking. Are all your flights on a single ticket and Passenger Name Record (PNR)? Or did you book separate tickets to stitch the journey together? This is the most critical detail. A single ticket means the airline is responsible for getting you to your final destination, even if a delay causes you to miss a connection. They must rebook you on the next available flight. If you booked separate tickets (a 'self-transfer'), you are on your own. If your first flight is late, the second airline considers you a no-show, and you will likely have to buy a new ticket at your own expense.
Verify Minimum Connection Times
Every airport has a 'Minimum Connection Time' (MCT), which is the shortest legal time required to transfer between flights. For domestic connections in India, this can be 60-90 minutes, while international-to-domestic transfers often require more, sometimes up to four hours, especially at busy hubs like Delhi or Mumbai. Airlines won't sell single tickets that violate the MCT, but if you're booking separate tickets, the responsibility is yours. During the festive rush, always add a generous buffer to the official MCT. Winter fog in North India, for example, can cause frequent delays, making a tight connection extremely risky. A layover that seems long is your best insurance against delays.
Confirm Baggage Transfer Rules
With a single PNR, your checked baggage is usually 'tagged through' to your final destination. However, there are exceptions. When arriving in India from an international flight and connecting to a domestic one, you almost always have to collect your bags, clear customs, and then re-check them for the next flight, even if the tag says your final destination. Confirm this with the check-in agent. For separate tickets, you will always need to collect and re-check your luggage, which adds significant time. Factoring in this process is vital when assessing your layover time.
Plan Your Onstround Transfers
Your connection might not be in the same airport. Some journeys involve a transfer between different airports in the same city. For festive travel, pre booking any necessary transportation is crucial. Airport shuttles can be full, and ride hailing services often have surge pricing and long wait times during peak periods. Book a reliable airport cab service in advance to avoid stress and delays. Also, familiarise yourself with the terminal layouts of your connecting airports. Knowing whether you need to take a shuttle bus between terminals can save you precious minutes.
The 48 Hour Pre Flight Checklist
In the two days before you travel, be proactive. Check in online as soon as it opens. This allows you to secure your seat and have your boarding passes ready. Monitor your flight status using the airline’s app. Airlines may change schedules, and early notification gives you more time to adapt. Reconfirm all bookings, including flights and any pre booked ground transfers. Ensure all your travel documents are organised and accessible. If flying internationally, double check any transit visa requirements for your layover country, as this can be an unexpected hurdle.
What To Do If You Miss A Connection
If the worst happens, don't panic. If you are on a single ticket, immediately go to the airline's transfer desk, which is usually located in the transit area. Do not exit security unless instructed. The airline staff will rebook you on the next available flight. If the delay is significant, you may be entitled to meal vouchers and accommodation. If you are on separate tickets, you must act fast. Contact the second airline, but be prepared to book and pay for a new flight yourself. In either case, document everything and inform your travel insurance provider, as they may cover some of the associated costs.
