The Perennial Challenge: Mumbai's Festive Exodus
Every year, as Diwali approaches, a massive wave of people surges from Mumbai towards their hometowns across the country. This exodus puts immense pressure on the railway network, with tickets on popular routes getting sold out within minutes of the booking
window opening. Premier trains to states like Uttar Pradesh and Bihar often show waitlists in the hundreds almost instantly, leaving many hopeful travellers stranded. The sheer volume of people trying to book at once can lead to website crashes and immense frustration, turning the joyous prospect of a homecoming into a logistical nightmare. It's a yearly test of patience and planning for millions.
Railways' 2026 Plan to Ease the Rush
To manage this predictable yet overwhelming demand, Indian Railways has stepped in with a significant intervention for Diwali 2026. Central Railway has announced it will run 418 special train services to cater to the festive rush for Diwali, Puja, and Chhath. These services will connect major Mumbai terminals like Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) and Lokmanya Tilak Terminus (LTT) with numerous destinations. The goal is to add capacity on the most sought-after routes, offering more berths and giving more people a chance to travel home comfortably and safely during the holiday period.
Key Special Routes Announced from Mumbai
The announced special services cover a wide range of destinations, focusing on high-demand corridors. Central Railway has scheduled services from Mumbai to cities in both North and South India. For travellers heading to Uttar Pradesh, bi-weekly special services will run between LTT and Mau, as well as LTT and Banaras. To manage the rush towards the south, weekly AC special services are planned between CSMT and Chennai Beach, and also between CSMT and SMVT Bengaluru. Furthermore, weekly superfast specials will connect CSMT with Nagpur, while other services will link Mumbai to Kolhapur and Latur. For those travelling to Kerala, a weekly special via the Konkan Railway route will connect LTT with Thiruvananthapuram North. These trains will run between October and November 2026 to cover the entire festive period.
How and When to Book Your Tickets
Securing a seat on these special trains requires prompt action. Bookings for many of these newly announced festive specials opened on September 27, 2026. Tickets can be booked through the official IRCTC website (irctc.co.in), the RailOne mobile app, and at all computerised railway reservation counters. It is important to note that these trains often run with 'special charges,' making the fares slightly higher than regular services. To improve your chances, it's highly recommended to create a 'Master List' of passengers on your IRCTC account beforehand. This pre-saves details like name, age, and ID proof, saving crucial seconds during the high-traffic booking process. Given how quickly seats fill up, being ready the moment bookings open is essential.
